I have loved this forum for a long time and have recently become addicted to the Purses/bags/wallets section.  Everyone is so talented - you have really inspired me.  I just finished my first bag, and I LOVE it...Here it is:

Front: (I used a home decor fabric on sale at Joann's for $9/yard)

Inside: (It's a heavy cotton - I snagged a bunch of it at Wal-Mart years ago for $2/yard.  I finally found a use!)

Back: (with the pattern I used, Simplicity 4670)

I'm not an experience sewer (seamstress?), so I took it slow and steady, but it was pretty easy all in all.  What do you think?

Very elegant results! I like the fabric- it's kinda mod/IKEAish and perfect for summer.

mimik - it's beautiful.  You did a great job - excellent for an inexperienced OR experienced sewer (seamstress:))

My first purse was from a pattern...I needed that 'boost' of confidence that I could do it.  Now, I make my own patterns left and right.  SO much that I haven't touched a powertool in MONTHS!  (I have to admit that I'm going through jigsaw withdrawals, though!!!)

I totally know what you are talking about!  I was hoping to find black wooden handles to go with the black outlines of the flowers (I wanted it to look more asian inspired than tropical, and that print can go both ways).  I looked in every store online and the only 6 1/2 handles I could find (which is what the pattern called for) were bamboo.  I was so disappointed, and I worried that bamboo would look tacky, but this being my first pattern, I didn't want to deviate from the size requirements, so I bought them.  I was so pleasantly surprised when I put it together and it actually worked.  I'm kind of glad that I didn't know how to adjust the pattern to fit a slightly smaller wooden handle!
PwrToolChick - that's really encouraging to hear that you were able to start making your own patterns...I can only dream!

Thank you so much for the wonderful comments, all!

great job on your first one. I have the feeling you will be much more experienced with that pattern! There are so many ways to spruce up these bags and once you have mastered these ones the ideas will flow freely. Keep sewing you are doing great!
