great places to get cool supplies and what-not on oahu
«

so, i was thinking, we could complie a list and swap ideas:
i love getting supplies at:
well,
marakia (sp) 99cent stores are actually really great. the one at ward, and the random one in the safe way in salt lake (i think that's where it is) they have random origami papers, chopsticks, and tons of storage bins. they also have lotsa cheap goodies you can use to reconstruct/repurpose.
i love, love, love, the salvation army in kailua!
isle knit on the 14th floor on the century center (i think that's what it's called) on bishop in chinatown is also good for bamboo knitting needles. she also sells lotsa yarn, but it can be expensive--but where else are you gonna go on this island??
if there is anyone else out there on oahu, i'd love to hear where you get your supplies and other cool stuff....

I think you mean Marukai (for the 99 cent stores).
I try to hit the Goodwill stores in Kaimuki at the end of the month when they run 50% off specials and whatnot. I've gotten men's buttondown shirts for $3.00 and sweaters for unraveling for about the same. For those not in the know, there's a small Goodwill for men's clothes, and then a larger one with women's/children's clothes and housewares half a block away. Also fond of the big Saver's in the Kalihi/Kapalama area.
Craft Supply of Honolulu (in Pearl City and Honolulu) has a wide selection of general crafting supplies. They have novelty yarns and Red Heart yarn...I'd rather go to Isle Knit. Sue is great and her prices are really quite reasonable for what she carries in stock. I have been knitting a child's poncho with Plymouth Encore yarn I bought there - $5.50 per skein, and the poncho uses about a skein and a half. I found a couple of other yarn stores in the phone book but haven't checked them out.

Don't forget the Ben Franklins around the island. I've found their craft card to be more than worth the price! I think my husband and I made up the cost in the first month.
And let me just say Yay! Finally a Hawaii "city" guide! I myself live in Honolulu and sew, crochet, a little embroidery and some other silly misc crafting. I'm looking to learn how to knit and just joined the S&B yahoo group so hopefully that'll help. I'd love to find new crafting buddies on the island.

ditto on the Goodwill. The Kaimuki one is great, and I've found a bunch of really cool kid's shirts (that I turn into running shirts) at the Beretania store.

If you guys need blank shirts there is a cool store on the corner of waiakamil and I think kalani street. Anyways it's right before that shopping center with foodland and office depot. I buy bunches of shirts there then stencil them up.

I finally made it to Flora-Dec and was pretty disappointed. The prices were high and the selection not great. I was looking mostly for knitting stuff, and they had no needles and very little yarn. My favorite craft stores are still Craft Supply of Honolulu and Wal-Mart.

personally i love flora-dec -- it does close at 6 pm tho and kind of tricky to find the parking lot. they have tons of fake flowers and wedding cake paraphernalia -- good place to get miniature greek columns and palm trees out of plastic, and you know how often you need those!

oh i haven't posted in a while but i thought i might because I'm gonna make those picture frame necklaces like this one:
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=39105.0
i prefer to buy locally so i've been running around to hardware stores trying to find everything. the hardest things to get are the microscope slides and the copper tape. ah but i got them! i stole microscope slides from UH. Then i found a stained glass shop in kaimuki that sells copper tape. honolulustainedglass.com they also have lots of other neat stuff. if you guys want to try that project out you can definitely find everything you need here!

I like to go to the Ben Franklin in Kaimuki (I think that is hwere it is X_X) there is also a really cute guy that works there, so it is DOUBLE THE FUN when I go there...LOL!
But honestly, the Ben Frankin that I go to just expanded a few months ago, so now the layout that they have there is MUCHO better.

If anyone likes to scrapbook there are two places in Pearl City I know of: Scrapper's Den (my boyfriend's Mom loves it) and Scrapbook Clubhouse near Pearlridge. I also know of a place in Kailua called A Place In Time. They just opened recently and have lots of cute things.

I've never been to the Ben Franklin bead shop, but I have been to Bead it! and I really like it. I'm originally from California (Ocean Beach) and I'm used to having tons of hippie crafting supplies EVERYWHERE. it seems like every craft store here only sells items for Hawaiian crafts? of course, I have 3 kiddos, so I don't get a bunch of time to go searching about.
if you're ever in Ocean Beach, CA....check out The Black Bead. it'll blow your mind!

I dunno if anyone checks this thread anymore but where are all the yarn stores around here? My local Ben Franklins only has Red Heart and novelty stuff, and while I have a love for Red Heart it really mirrors a deep deep hate for novelty yarn. Also I need wool. (I'm sending stuff to the pacific NW)
Help anyone?

rad kit, i don't live in hawaii anymore, but a few years back (maybe in 2004 or 2005) before Ben Franklin began carrying better knitting supplies (like bamboo needles, not yarn) I went to a place in a highrise in chinatown, Isle Knit, i think it was called.
This is the address and phone number: Isle Knit 1188 Bishop St Ste 1403 Phone: (808) 533-0853 (so you can call to see if it's still there, or if they have what you want) it was a very tiny place, and i didn't buy yarn the one time i went there, so i'm not really sure of the selection.
also, there's a group called Aloha Knitters (they used to be a SNB), they have a myspace page, and i'm sure you could find good shops through them: aloha knitters:
http://www.myspace.com/alohaknitters
hope that helps....(oh, have to tried walmart? i remember that the walmart near ala moana would have ok yarn (in the fall/winter)
