I live in wallingford and am not having luck. I want to learn how to use my machine. Basically I'm looking to sew on scrapbook pages/layouts, make small doll clothes (for a 5 inch doll) and maybe use a simple pattern to make an apron.

Where can I go? I"m a beginner I have never even turned the machine on!

A lot of Joann's stores offer classes to people who bought their sewing machines there, but you may be able to get into one of the classes even if you didn't. A lot of machines are very similar and once you learn the basics, your manual should help quite a bit.

I personally learned on a machine that did straight and zig zag stitches in middle school, then through manuals and kind of remembering what I did, worked my way up to a digital machine.

Since you seem to really only need the straight, zig zag, and maybe a couple of decorative stitches, Joann's should be able to help. I'm in Bristol, and I forget where Wallingford is exactly, but there's a huge store in manchester that I know does the classes and I think Bristol might too, though that I know would be a 45 minutes drive for you. If you visit their website, you can probably find one closer to you if you don't already know of one.

Middletown adult ed has classes too, at Middlesex College.  I just took their beginners sewing class in Old Saybrook and Marian, the instructor, ROCKS.

Etsy Labs in Brooklyn just listed a couple of sewing classes - I don't know if Brooklyn is too far of a hike for you though:
