I'll tell the story of this cute painting right from the beginning.
On Saturday, I went to the nearest big city with my friends, shopping. I had a great time messing around, I got another cartilage piercing in my left ear, etc. etc. I then came across two or three "1 Pound" shops. These are basically the equivalent of the American "Dollar Tree" store, but there are more of them, and not all of them are chains.
I went in there, and lo and behold - I found some oil paints and an 8x10 canvas, both seemingly brand new. I had a safety pin in my bag, so I discreetly took a box of the paints, and pierced one of the tubes. The paint came out fine, not too oily, which I hadn't expected. I thought they'd have been in some stock room for a couple of years and were well past their best. The canvas looked pretty ok too. I paid my 2.00 for these items, and took them home, not really knowing what I was going to do with them.

When I got home, I suddenly had an idea. My brother and I have always had a love for Nintendo and Taito arcade and console games. So I decided to do a pixeled painting, based on one of the Super Mario characters. I was going to do Yoshi (the dinosaur) to start off with, but I thought that he would be a bit difficult, so I chose the lovely green 1-UP mushroom instead.

How I did it
1. First, I opened up all my paints and took the plastic off my canvas. I then calculated how many 1cm squares I would need on my canvas in order to fit on my mushroom. This worked out at 16x16.
2. I drew a grid onto the canvas lightly in pencil. I then shaded in the squares I wanted black, and put crosses (x) in the squares I wanted green. Anything else within those squares that was left blank, was to be painted white.
3. Tentatively, I got painting. I did wet next to wet on the first day, which was risky, but it came out fine. I left it to dry for three days, then painted another coat. I let that dry for another two days, and painted another coat.
Today I filled in the rest of the blue, and on Saturday I will do another coat of blue to cover up that nasty black smudge I accidentally made. As you can see there are some obvious mistakes which need fixing (crooked lines, smudges, minor colour bleeding and so on).

Here's the work in progress:

Sorry about the blurriness... My hands are stupidly unsteady.  Angry

Next up, I'm going to do Bub from the popular arcade game Bubble Bobble. I won't do it in oil paints though, they take way too long to dry!  Roll Eyes
