I am SO happy with the way this turned out, but I don't think I ever want to do it again, kwim?  Creating the individual doilies was fun, hooking them together while keeping them properly spaced and the whole thing flat was way too much of a pain, of course there's probably an easier way to do it than I did.  But it turned out gorgeous, and my daughter loves it, so that's what's important.  The idea of using doily patterns and putting them together into a garment was inspired by this thread about a camisole Anthropologie sells, https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=57274.0.  The general shape of the shrug was inspired by a really long thread on the knitting board where several members ended up coming up with a pattern together.  I don't knit well, so I took the general shape of the pattern and then did something completely different to achieve it.  Here is a picture of the individual doilies before I joined them, and front and back pictures of the completed project:
