hello ladies and gents, i present you with.... A KNITTED HUG!
I saw a lady in one of my classes wearing something similiar, and I was so jealous I knit ti up myself. I changed it to have kimono style shorter sleeves, and to be a wee bit looser all around. Perfect for changing climates, and bonus it can work as a scarf too! Wonderful for travel!
Knit flat on size 9mm needles in rainbow mohair. Yay!!!!

and to maybe see the colours better:

please let me know what you think.

Wow. That's a really awesome garment. I cannot get over how cool it is, just as an article of clothing, and the fact that it's knitted makes it. . .even cooler.

Plus, it looks incredibly comfy and fuzzy. Great work, I'm really impressed.

I've never seen a piece of clothing like that. I really like it. And the yarn you used (which I've seen before in a ball and thought that it would never look good when used to make anything) is perfect.

thanks ladies!
i am so in love with this thing that its hard to express, but everybody i talked to about it was like "um, i'm not sure i get it". so it makes me hapy to know that i'm not alone in thinking this rocks. and yes it is very comfy, and soft.
also, when i bought this yarn, i had no idea what to do with it. i just had to have it because it was so bright. months later, and this is the perfect piece for it.

I like it esthetically more than a shrug. Looks Fabulous.
Don't suppose there's a pattern for it kicking around somewhere?

Wow! I want to make one NOW. Can I resist the urge? I'm busy crafting accessories for a trip next week. Maybe this would be a good airplane project (even thought I'd planned to crochet earrings)

a pattern? sure.
there are two ways to do it
1) my lazy way: knit a big old rectangle (i cast on 44 sts on size 9mm needles) knit in stockinette until you get to where your shoulder is. knit half way across (so 22 sts.) put the rest on a stitch holder (i improvised for this, and used a small circular and an elastic band. creativity is key) the knit up on the still active side until you feel you reached the other shoulder. now go back and do the same on the inactive side. join the two and keep on your merry way until the first sleeve is the same length as the second sleeve. bo loosely and seam sleeves. note: do not seam all the way to neck opening as it will look funny, leave 2inches or so.
2) the way it might be more professional: co 44(or whatever) stitches on appropriate sized circulars. knit sleeve, open it up and make neck like in my lazy way, knit in the round the next sleeve. bo and wear.

have fun making it.

OH and last night I wore it out, and my friends said it was very 70s. And star treky, but in a good way (I'm still not sure how I feel about this, but beer was involved) And even the bartender complimented me on "my pretty top" when I told him I made it, he introduced himself! Maybe he wants one too?

Great job ambear - that looks sweet!  A good way to jazz up my t-shirt and jeans wardrobe.  I like the sleeves you chose - they make it stand out from other hugs I've seen.  How much yarn does it take?  I have 50 m of some beautiful yarn that is perfect for this project, but that's probably not enough, eh?

um i believe that i had 150 grams. or maybe 150 yards. there were at least 100grams of yarn used though.
thats really not very helpful. i'm sorry.
i can go to the store i bought it at and see if i can find out for you, as i used an entire skein. but, no 50 yards, would be too little, unles you increased needle size and made it lacier, which would be hot in its own right.

Amber, this is SOO wonderful!

When you've spoken about it, i don't think I could really get a sense of the visuals, but It turned out so wonderfully. I was doubtful about the yarn before, but you've made it hot shit.

I am loving it.

I dig this! It reminds me a lot of knitty's cleaves, but it seems a like a quicker knit and less of a loose fit:

its a little like cleaves, ya. but far more wearable. i feel like for cleaves you'd need to be really skinny and have quirky cool style. this is more like a 'cleaves for the rest of us'. i think im gonna make me another one but with longer sleeves and a cable running up them. we will see.

Hey, me + beer + star trek = I think it's awesome. I mean, that's how I ended up with the boy  Wink

I'm fairly certain the ball you used was 100g, so 2 normal sized balls would do it.

Well, I don't know what the bartender had in mind but I am seriously thinking of making this in some boring color for my husband, he complains all the time that his shoulders are cold in our apt but not the rest of him, refuses to wear a real sweater says he gets too hot...He wears some hats that look sillier on him than this would (wow they would look really funny together!)

Then i could make a pretty one for ME!!!!
This looks like just about the right level for my knitting skills...

THANKS!

Picked up the yarn for it, now i'm getting excited.
Must wait until finished essays, but then watch out there will be furious knitting.
And of course I will posta  pic of it when it's done.

It's one of the few shrugy-esq patterns that will look good on a larger girl without making it look.... like i'm pregnant. As is what happens with the circular sided shrugs. :\

Ok - here's my version.  I knit it from front to back, instead of side to side.  I also added some ribbing on the sleeves.

Closeup of sleeve:

I think it looks a little weird when I'm just standing normal:

I guess I'll have to walk around with my hands on my hips all the time!
Thanks, ambear, for this idea.  It was a nice quick knit that produced something unique to wear!
