I just learned about a week ago. I had no one to teach me, but the book "Easy Tatting" by Rozella F Linden explains things quite nicely. I even have a few decent looking... things. Ha.

I learned to shuttle tatt in high school and a little later discovered needle tatting. I like needle tatting so much. I actualy made doilys with it- and they were big ol bulky yarn doilys.
Around the holidays you can usualy find tatting books because everyone wants lacy snowflakes.....

I have been wanting to learn tatting for some time, shuttle tatting looks way to complicated to me, I found this kit I am thinking about getting:

I was inspired by this post:

OK, I think I am going to Hobby Lobby after work to see what I can find.

I definitely recommend it Smiley It's very calming and you get that fuzzy proud feeling inside when you realize these fun little swirls and lace are coming from your own fingertips.

I've only been tatting for a week or so now, and here's three things I've done:

My first piece ever:

A piece with chains:

First multi-colored piece:

I'm still working with the last one, putting another layer around it.

I tatt Smiley I love it, unfortunately I only do basics really. Here's some good websites I've found for instructions and patterns etc. for shuttle tatting
http://www.bellaonline.com/subjects/3737.asp
http://www.gagechek.com/slb/index.html has little demos
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/5082/
http://home.netcom.com/~ntrop/mimi/tatting.html a large list of links(some aren't active anymore)

I always suggest people check out their local librarys too. When I first learned I found a great instructional video at my library. The craft stores never have good selections when I look, first I have to find someone who knows what tatting is though at the craft stores. Crazy people.

Tatting is great!  Shuttle tatting is very simple!  I love your little pretty circles.   My dream is to make one of those lovely tatted crosses, but I think I need to learn needle tatting for that.

I dunno, with all the needle craft making a comeback tatting just might come back too.  Just a few years ago I couldn't find any supplies at the craft store for paper quilling, but now it is fairly readily available.
