i've been reading up on plastics and recycling and if you dig a little further into the "toxic fumes warnings", you will find that toxicity occurs with prolonged exposure in industrial volumes. many of the medical and scientific papers on plastic polymers and their toxicities cite that it hasn't been proven to cause these ill effects with 'natural, normal' exposure times IN HUMANS. unless you plan on melting polystyrene hardcore like a production plant, i don't think you'll be producing enough toxic fumes to attack your body/systems. do be careful of course.
also, depending on who produced the polystyrene, shrinkage and warpage are different.
i've been trying to figure out how to recycle plastic shopping bags into a stained glass type of material to work from, so i've done a lot of internet and library research. i've still got more to learn, but just thought i'd pass along what i've gleaned thus far. also, i think it might make a difference whether you're using a gas or electric oven to heat it up in.

whatever the case, great job on the experiment! the best ideas come from 'what if...' inspirations! Grin

Grin Thank you! Grin    I love POTC, most especially Captain Jack Sparrow...

Good luck with your jewelry  Smiley  I wouldn't want my messages of doom to overshadow my opinion;  it's gorgeous.  And it's good you're getting feedback from people with more in-depth knowledge than just me...all I know is little bits I've come across randomly.

Recycled jewelry?
