There's an Italian tubular cast on that starts with a small number, doubles on the next row, then doubles on the row after that. If it's this one, then 23 sts inc to 46, which incs to 92 which may be just about right...

It was a miscalculation. I contacted the blogger who wrote the pattern and she helped me out. But now the hat is actually turning out way too large to fit around my head, so I am going to have to start over again! I'm skipping the tubular cast on this time. It was a pain, and mine didn't look good enough to be worth it.
