I knitted an afghan for my friend's mother after he committed suicide.  It was a really, REALLY hard time for us both, and it was a very healing thing for me to do.  I documented the whole thing here on craftster, here's the link to my original post.

So sorry to hear of your loss - my grandmother passed away a few weeks ago.  She lived next door to us for almost 30 years, so I understand the sad occasion.  I've not given anything specifically, but I did make copies of the memory dvd and music cd the funeral home made for us.  We now all have pics of my grandmother from childhood to her 90th birthday party.  I'm sure your mother will appreciate the gift now more than ever.
