This is my first time posting something I've made so I have no idea what I'm doing; hope it works. I made the beads from all different kinds of paper. Fun and cheap!!!

wow thanks guys Kiss after posting my first pic i got so excited that people in different parts of the world may see what i made and try it, like i've been doing with their beautiful work for so long! but the compliments make me feel so warm and fuzzy. on a side note, can i just say that i LOVE craftster for being such a supportive place, and i've decided to do more swapping and less giving handmade, time-consuming special gifts to friends who don't appreciate them. around here, we know how special this stuff is, right?  Cheesy

i wish i had a close up of a few of the beads so you could see how glossy they are. i got the idea from a book at the library, and the author recommends you start with the stick from a q-tip (only the hollow kind will work). that's how they are so durable and have such uniformity. they are really, really NOT waterproof, though. even varnished, it's still paper. water-resistant, maybe, but not proof. trust me, i learned the hard way. Start with:
hollow, plastic q-tip barrels
long skinny triangles of magazine paper (easiest to work with, esp. to start)
glue stick (a must)
clear nail polish
something to dry them on, like dry spaghetti noodles or straightened paper clips

apply glue to back of the paper triangle
wrap around barrel, starting with fat end (if this is where you always get into trouble, you can start it with a little strip of tape)
wrap tightly, pulling the whole time
make sure pointy end is securely glued down.
fill the barrel with more beads.

put them on something to dry (i use straightened paper clips that rest on the edges of a small cardboard box) apply clear nail polish generously and let dry overnight.

good luck!
