thanks for all the lovely comments! you guys are so encouraging.
do you sketch the designs out first (using a transfer pen or some kind of transfer paper) or just (gulp) do it all freehand? Oh, don't say the latter... I am just so not worthy!
most of my embroidery designs come from very small (like less than 3 inch) doodles from my sketchbook. if it is fairly simple, I just pencil the basic shapes onto the fabric, then add smaller details as I go. If it is more complex, I draw it out larger on paper, then trace it onto the fabric with a light board. Smiley
