Hi Guys,

I've been working on re-doing my website over the holidays. It's current look has been well-received, but I have quite a few qualms with it. Primarily, I've just found it to be *too* peppy-cutesy & over-geometric. Sort of generic. I don't think I was being very innovative when i designed it. But hey, for a first stage, it's not bad. I just think it's a bit limiting in its suggestion of what my product's all about. I Think the colour-scheme pops a little *too* much.

Anyway, I've been hard at work on some improvements, and want to get the new version up before school gets into full swing this semester. But I need some quality constructive criticism and feedback to do it! What I tried to do was make it a little more subtle & elegant, yet retaining the original site's quirkiness. I'm hoping that now it will be a fitting home for the more chic pieces I've been doing for a while, while remaining a comfy environment for the perky & cute vinyl things I make. I'm afraid much of the content that's currently on the site is highly outdated, and doesn't really reflect my product that well, as I've been waiting for the new look's launch to update it... alas. but nonetheless, I think the spirit of the thing is present.

anyway, if you can tell me what you like in the new, preferred in the old, what's missing in the new, what there's too much of, etc... the works.... it would be highly valued.

the site as it stands: http://www.jasfitz.com
the screenshot of the new look: http://www.jasfitz.com/graphics/Picture3.png (please excuse the nonsense text filler, copy-pasted from a project I wrote last term Wink )

Thanks a bazillion. As a graphic designer, it's strang how difficult it is for me to get a perspective on my own work!

You've got some cute pouches there!  I like when I can see of your new version on the screen shot.  But that's just because I prefer lighter/brighter sites.  Your original was a little dark.  The colors on the new one are fun and the layout looks good--very professional!

I think the lime green is still a little too punchy (at least on my screen)
I actually liked the dark background on the old site. It seemed to make the items pop a little more. But over all very nice! And nice crafts too! good job

thanks very much for your feedback! And your compliments! I hope some more people will take a look.

one of my biggest concerns of all is if the colours look the same (or very close) on most screens... esp. since I have an lcd monitor, and I don't know if it would look different on a crt monitor.... I *do* want the lime to pop.... but not too much, you know? fine lines are so frustrating! I guess I find that the other colours used are quite subdued, so i want to retain a little bit of spunkiness.

I tend to gravitate towards dark colour schemes, too, because I usually value richness of colour, but I've read that the majority of people prefer paler sites with dark text, as they find it easier to ingest.

here's a possibility: if i were to change the lime green that sits as background to the "updates" section, to something gentler, would that maybe balance it out enough?

sounds like a good idea, I would try that. maybe just a screen of the green background.

I think black absorbs too much and makes the whole site sort of, well, depressing. In the new site I would remove the dark green and brown altogether; most of it is just space hoggers, taking away from the products. When your background takes priority over what it is you're selling, that's a clue to rethink the design. In my opinion.

Thanks for your suggestions, craftychef... you're addressing precisely the point I'm most concerned about: is the site perky/quirky *enough* or does it just look too winter blues. It seems like everyone has an opinion either really for or really against, which is hard, so far. I'm a little confused about your "black" comment though, as I haven't actually used any black in the design. Do you mean as a base for any given colour? Which site are you referring to, the old, or the new?

Thanks, again!

I really like the layout of the new page - espcially the organic/swirly graphics. It could be my color settings, but the colors seem to clash a little. I like the darker tealy green & brown together and I like the brighter yellow-green with the blue...but I am not sure of all the colors together. Overall I like the design and layout. It is just the colors that aren't my thing. It is almost like the colors are competing for attention and I forget to look at your awesome pouches.

The text from you project sounds intriguing...since I am a fan of Scheile, art and all things art related!

I agree about the colors competing. I do think that it takes away from the products. Although, great design!

i definitely like the newer version better, and i agree that colors compete a little-- maybe if they were two different shades of the same color? I LOVE the swirly design, but i feel that the links at the top of the page (towards the right) get totally lost.

overall i like, and i'm jealous. Smiley
