It's what happens with two color brioche stitch.  It involves slip stitches, yarn overs, and K/P 2 sts tog....sounds complicated, but once you get the hang of it your needles will fly. I learned the stitch from the spring 2005 issue of Intrweave knits, but if you look around there's information (although surprisingly little) online.  I <3 Brioche!

yep...two mainly knit rows alternating colors folowed by two mostly purl rows alternating colors
