hey i just went to value village today (hate it, way too expensive now, and they make a huuge profit)
anyways, i wanted to be a 50`s housewife, so i bought one of those classic early 90`s sack dresses, with the bow in the back, but this was a bit differant, red with white polka dots, and a blazer-like open collar. some cool detail in the back.  but it was like.. down to my ankles. and sack -like. so i cut and sewed it to fit me, to flare out at the hips, and go to just under the knees. then i made an apron out of a tablecloth i bought at VV as well (they wanted 7 bucks for it! but i brought it down to 5). i`m gonna wear my mom`s white pumps with it too, then have a string of pearls, maybe hit up an oven mitt and bring along a batch of cookies..  oh and do my hair up all 50's. i might sew sleeves on later, since the dress came sleeveless and i was a bit lazy. but it still feels like its missing something..  what do you think? suggestions..?

the cool back.. i don't know why the original dress had that open crossing strap thing going on

hmm, the pearls and the having your hair up would help. I would add some red lipstick and instead of the oven mitts and cookies (I'm lazy, and hate to carry stuff on halloween) wear white gloves and carry a copy of cosmo/some other women's magazine. Maybe just some sheer white tights to finish off?

I think what you've got looks great, I wouldn't add any sleeves - the dress looks great as is!

Love this idea and your sewing skills! Maybe a crinoline to make the skirt stick out more would add to the '50s vibe. Like Julianne Moore's character in Far From Heaven? http://fidm.edu/Features/gallery/hollywood_2003/heaven.html How about some red rick rack trim along the top of the apron's ruffle and around the waist tie?
