Here's a chullo, complete with earflaps for that vicious prairie wind. I made up the pattern -- just started w/a small circle and increased gradually.

It's crocheted from several different yarns; I started off with a ball of Noro Kureyon with a rusty/green/pink colour scheme. I used it again a couple of times further down. The bright yellow is handspun yarn dyed with gooseberries. There are a few rows crocheted with banana frond yarn.

Essentially, I started with a small circle and crocheted even for 3 or 4 rows. Then I began to increase very gradually. Once I thought that the little chullo peak was complete, I began to increase a little less gradually until I had a good crown width, then continued even until the hat was complete. The earflaps are just two triangles which I crocheted around to make a rounder look.
