My dress literally came from the floor of a thrift store.  It was in a rumpled heap in the middle of the circular rack of evening gowns and wedding dresses.  I'm the type of person who picks up things that have fallen in stores.  I'm forever straightening Ikea displays!

So I just picked it up, thinking, "Whatever this is, it shouldn't be on the floor".  Then, as I hung it back up, I thought, "Hey.  I actually might like this."  But I'd already engaged the services of a costume-designer to custom-make me a dress, so I left the store, dejected and confused.  I called my mother from the car, who insisted I go back and try the fool thing on.  For $50, she said, there's no loss if you buy it and don't end up wearing it.  Okay.  I tried it on as best I could (the 30-something buttons up the back were impossible to do by myself), and then marched it right up to the cash register.  The sales lady asked what I was going to do with it, I guess meaning for what costume or theatrical use.  I answered, "Wear it to my wedding!"  I was so pleased.

Of course it didn't fit.  But I found a fabulous seamstress who was able to alter it to my, um, modern physique, and voila!  Kind of.  There were dry-cleaner-butt-bow issues, but I wore it for the wedding.  We even discovered, upon close examination, it had the original tag on it from John Wanamaker's, a former department store in the Philadelphia area.  So I know that much little bit about it.

Thanks for letting me share.  I'll post more pics if I can get the resolution small enough.
