Ok.....what I have so far is an 81 x 94 square of single crochet.

The stitch for the main body of the bag is definitely single crochet.  Hdc is too thick and bulky and dc is too tall and has too much open space between the stitches.  Row after row of single crochet when you turn and sc on the "wrong" side...back and forth....makes them .......double high ?  and symmetric....I...hard to explain....

I'm borrowing this image...

See how the pink section is "ribbed"?  You can see two full thick rows running up and down?  That's actually 4 rows of sc.  Front...flip...Back = one of those rows.

I am 100% sure that's what was done on the bag....

And I think I was wrong about the bottom corners needing to be "pac man" shapes....

I think a 1/2 circle is crocheted and attached to the side of the large rectangle that makes the body of the bag before folding it up and seaming the sides.

WOW! Cute bag, definitely!

I'm totally going to try to recreate this bag for myself, as soon as i finish making an afghan for my mummy..

But my thoughts on the bags construction:
The main body is two main panels that are HDC separately. The corner pieces look like they are cluster stitched and then appear to be overcast stitched onto the bag.

The two main panels are "sewn" together then pleated, or temporarily held in place, because it looks like the top part is crocheted separately, then overcast stitched onto the bag, which will attach the main panels and the top panels together.. (The pleating will give the bag the slanted look, so it won't be square)

After the outside of the bags put together, the lining is sewn in and the decorative leather pieces and zipper are added as well..

and FINISHED!

Now I really want to make one of these!!

I think you may be on the mark with that cluster stitch there!

thank you Kristen81

I'm going on a small trip with my fam in the next few days, so i think i'm going to take some yarn and crochet on the drive there, and back.. and in all my spare time lol.

I definitely do not want to use acrylic or plain cotton, i want something super soft.. and kinda thin-ish, bulky yarns will probably make the stitches unsightly, so i'll check my local craft store and perhaps wal-mart b/c those are the only places i have to shop at Sad

I have the base of the bag done!!!  I have done the top but I'm not satisfied with how it looks so I'm ripping it out ...

I'll post pics of the base soon.

I used plain soft white acrylic for mine (I think the original looks cotton) because I wanted it to be sturdy!

I've finished the bottom of my bag!!!

Working on the top...go it partly finished....going to line the top with pleather before attaching it to the bag...

The pleating looks wonky in the photo cause of the way the bag is sitting....looks straight in real life.
