I don't think I've ever posted a tutorial on here before, so now is a perfect time to do so.

I showed DH a cute little multicolored crocheted birthday cake on Instagram, and he immediately wanted me to make him one for his birthday!  (He loves me making him things, it's so cute!  Cheesy)  That was during the summer and his birthday is the 21st of this month.  So a week or two ago I got crackin!

The cake on Instagram was basically an amigurumi, and had safety eyes and an embroidered mouth.  That's the only thing I don't have on his cake yet because I need to buy black felt to make those for this project, and I keep on forgetting to buy it.  Roll Eyes

I tried to match the colors as close as I could to the Instagram one (using stash!):

I wanted this birthday cake to be useful, so instead of stuffing it, this is how it kept its shape:

(I'm going to put gift cards and scratch offs in it.)

I then just chose which yarn to start with and crocheted a chain till it was snug around the jar when attached end to end.  I then used a half double crochet stitch around, and started the next color and so on and so forth till it reached the top lip of the jar.

Along the bottom, I used the white yarn to make "frosting".  All I did was chose a spot to start on the bottom and did a *half double crochet, double crochet, triple crochet, double crochet, half double crochet* then skip a space, do a slip stitch into the skipped space, and continue with the * to * till it's completely around the bottom.  (I used the same stitch on the lid around the outside.)

I was going to use pipe cleaners and crochet over them for candles, but then I realized that they would make it almost impossible to open the jar.  So what I did was first crochet a flat circle, the same size as the top of the lid.

This part is hard to explain because I made it up as I went along...Once I was finished making the flat circle, I continued by going in the loop that was closest to my hook and did a half double crochet in it.  I did that around and around and around, going towards the middle of the circle.  I think I did it twice for height.  When I got to the middle, I double crocheted for extra height there.

Here it is finished, without decoration:

I sewed on some funky strawberry buttons on the top to give it some interest and to make it look finished:

I used E-600 to attach it to the glass jar top and it's held like a dream.

And the finished product:

This is going to be my "go to" birthday gift for everyone now...it is so easy...took me maybe two nights to finish it.  Hope you like it!

This is really cute and also very you! How funny, only a crafter would say "This only took me two nights" like it was no big deal, lol. Awesome.

I like Kit-Kat, unless I'm with 4 or more people.

JC, that was one of the parts I am so proud of.  I don't like amigurumi because they serve no purpose, IMHO, except being cute.  My house is already chock full of cute things, so I was thrilled when inspiration about using the jar hit.
