~*Harry Potter Craftalong ~ Yule Term 2019/2020*~

~*October 1st, 2019 - January 31st, 2020*~
Welcome to Hogwarts!

~*WHAT IS THE HP CRAFTALONG & HOW TO PARTICIPATE*~
The Harry Potter Craftalong (HPC) is a craftalong that celebrates our love of crafting and the world of Harry Potter.  In the HPC you complete classes & challenges with your craft skills, and each project you submit earns you House Points.  These classes and challenges all have HP themes, but your crafts do not have to be Harry Potter" related.  You may join any time during the semester, and may do as many (or as few) projects as you wish.  To participate, simply read through the class & challenge prompts below, find one that inspires you, create a craft to fit the challenge, then post it here.  That's all there is to it!  Each term we have prompts inspired by the classes that appear in the HP novels, as well as Detention prompts to motivate you on mundane crafty tasks, monthly Headmistress Challenges often related to the current season, as well as special challenges that come up from time to time.  Each class or challenge prompt may be completed only once per term.  You do not have to 'sign up' to participate.  Just post your first project, and you are in.  Headmistress Jennie will add you into the student list below when she next tallies House Points.  At the end of each term we count up the House Points, and declare a winner!

~*HOW TO POST*~
To submit a project, cut & paste the following header into your post, and fill in the required info.  (This helps the Headmistress in awarding you points.)  You can add more than one project to your post, but a header must be used for each individual project.

Class/Challenge:
SPEW: If your item is for charity, enter that here; if not leave blank or delete this line.
House:
Project Name & Page Link: Use the insert link feature to add a link to your projects posted here on Crafster, or to a recipe, pattern, etc.
Brief Description: How it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques used, any fun tips, etc.
Project Picture: REQUIRED! No picture = No House Points

~*ABOUT ELIGIBLE HPC PROJECTS*~
-Projects should take a minimum of 30 minutes to make.
-A project can only be submitted for one subject or prompt.
-Projects must be crafted & turned in within the timeframe designated.  No posting crafts you made years ago!
-For a project to be counted, it must have a picture or a link to a picture included at the time of posting.  If your item is a private piece, or is being kept secret for a Swap, you are more than welcome to post a link to the image or send a PM directly to the the Headmistress.
-For any cooking/food project, in addition to a photo, you must post a complete recipe, or a link to the recipe you used.  No recipe = no points.

~*HPC FAQs*~
-How long is a Term?  4 months
-When can I join?  Anytime!
-Do I have to sign-up to join this craftalong? Nope. All you have to do is post a 'hello' in the thread or just post a completed project.
-Do you sort me?  No, you decide which house you belong to.
-I have a problem or question; who can I ask?  You can send a Personal Message (PM) to Headmistress Mistress Jennie.  You can also ask questions in the thread; our participants are very helpful!
-Can I turn in something I did earlier? No.  You must complete your project during the current semester. Exceptions are OWLs & NEWTs which carry over from previous terms, or completing a WIP for Detention.
-Are we swapping? No, this is not a craft swap.
-Do I have to craft all the classes & challenges? No, just pick whatever you inspires you.
-What kind of projects are allowed? If Craftster has a category for it, then it is a viable HPC project.
-Does my craft project have to be Harry Potter themed? Nope. Craft anything you like.  Smiley

~*House Points*~
Each project you post earns points for your House.  Points are awarded thusly:
-15 points for a Class & Challenge prompts
-100 points for OWL projects (explained further below)
-150 points for NEWT projects (explained further below)
-10 bonus points for SPEW (Charity) Items

-You can complete any class or challenge prompt only once per term.
-Bonus (SPEW) points can be earned for any project you turn in, that goes to a legitimate charity.  If it doesn't fit a prompt, SPEW projects can be turned in as stand-alone projects and will earn 10 points.  Unlike other subjects, you can turn in all the SPEW projects you want.
- To determine House Cup Winner at the end of term, we take an average from the total points accumulated and number of students per house.

~*HPC on Facebook*~
The HPC is on Facebook!
https://www.facebook.com/groups/HPCraftalong
This is a place to share links, memes, photos, or videos that you cannot post on Craftster.  Please feel free to use the page to chit chat, ask questions, share pictures, etc.  This group is Closed, so folks must message me with BOTH their Craftster username, and a way to locate you on Facebook, in order to be added.

~*Class Prompts*~
Each term we have a new set of prompts inspired by the classes taught at Hogwarts.  These prompts are posted at the beginning of the term, and can be submitted anytime, up until the last day of the term.  You may complete any class or challenge prompt once per term.

---Alchemy: In alchemy, each classical planet was associated with one of the seven metals known to the classical world. As a result, the alchemical glyphs for the metal and associated planet coincide. Some alchemists also adopted the Hermetic Qabalah assignment between the vital organs and the planets.  The first planet we are going to study is Jupiter, which is linked to the metal Tin and the organ Liver.

For this term, please create something inspired by Jupiter, such as something sandy in colour or texture; alternately you may craft something associated with Tin, such as a recipe using tinned foods; or finally you may craft something that uses water in the creation process, to reflect the Liver, which uses water to flush toxins from the body.  For example, in painting, brushes are washed in water.

If you are seventeen years of age, or will turn seventeen on or before the 31st of August next, you are eligible for a twelve-week course of Apparition Lessons from a Ministry of Magic Apparition instructor. Please sign below if you woulds like to participate.

---Apparition:  Apparation is an optional 12-week course offered at Hogwarts by a Ministry of Magic Apparition instructor.  Since the class is optional, it incurs an additional cost of 12 Galleons.  Some families can afford paying twice as much and they wont even notice the loss, but for other families even half of that cost feels like a small fortune. For this term I want you to be inspired by the numbers 6, 12 or 24.  Maybe its how many rows you must knit for a design, or the number of ingredients in a recipe. Alternately, you can let yourself be inspired by the metal of our magical currency, gold, silver or bronze.

---Arithmancy:  Arithmancy is a highly logical class.  Nobody will pass this class by using muscle power.  Instead you have to use your brains to find the answers. Speaking of the brain, did you know that the surface of our grey matter is covered in sulci and gyri? The sulcus are the shallow grooves and the gyrus are the ridges. I know anatomy isnt a part of this class but lets take a moment to appreciate the amazing things we can do with that strange organ inside of our heads. For this term I want you to craft something with grooves and ridges. Many knitting or crochet patterns have grooves and ridges, you can also find such texture out in nature, like in the texture of tree bark or sea shells.  Alternately you may craft something grey in colour, or something for a cause that greatly matters to you.

---Astronomy: This month has seen a lot of news in the Muggle World about Climate Change and the marches organized around the globe to take bold action to combat it. When looking from the Muggle Space Station down onto Earth, many changes have been detected, including pollution, decrease in the size of the polar ice caps etc, and extreme weather.

For this term I would like you to craft something either inspired by the Climate Change marches, something that is made of a natural fiber or material, or something that can help with the "Zero Waste" movement, such as crafting cloth grocery bags, cooking a new meal from leftovers, crocheting a soap saver, making reusable sandwich wraps.

---Care of Magical Creatures (CoMC):  This term we will be focusing on fairies. The fairy is a tiny magical beast, often conjured by wizards to be used for decoration. (I know we have all admired the fairy-filled trees during the Christmas holidays!) The fairy is very small, ranging in size from one to five inches. They are humanoid in appearance with the exception of large insect-like wings that are transparent or multicolored depending on type.  For your assignment this Yule term, please decorate with something tiny (under five inches in any direction). Alternately, you may craft something influenced by the wings of the fairy. This could be something that uses more than three colors in a single project or something with a transparent aspect, such as a window in a fairy door, or a sun catcher.

---Charms:  The charm that we will be learning this semester is Arresto Momentum. This charm is used to slow things down. For your homework please make something that forces you to slow down and concentrate; alternatively consider time itself and make something related to timepieces, like clocks, watches, hourglasses, etc.

---DADA:  A malediction is a blood-borne curse that is carried in the bloodlines of wizarding families.  It can resurface after many generations to affect the descendants of the witches and wizards that were originally cursed.  For your homework please create something for a member of your family; either your family of choice or your family of blood.  Alternatively you may create something inspired by some aspect of blood, such as something red in color, something that uses rust, something containing iron, etc.

---Divination:  We will be finishing our work with the Tarots Minor Arcana this term. Our focus will be on the suit of swords. The suit of swords is most commonly associated with the element of Air (and its corresponding astrological signs - Aquarius, Libra and Gemini) and the season of autumn. The Swords are commonly associated with conflict and strife - both internal and external. These cards cut to the heart of the matter and can reveal truths we need to face in order to overcome obstacles. Simply put, Swords relate to knowledge, action, power, and change.

To demonstrate your understanding of the topic please complete the following assignment; create something that involves knives or scissors. You could cut up vegetables for a hearty soup or use scissors to carefully cut out a sewing pattern. Alternately you may use your knowledge of divination to overcome a difficult project.

---Flying:  Students are asked to please refrain from looping the loop on Hogwarts grounds.  This flying technique, where the flyer goes upside down to transcribe a vertical circle in the air, is dangerous and has no practical application.  If students insist on this pointless practice, they should at least learn to do it properly - to that end we will be offering a small flying workshop next Thursday at 6:30.  Please arrive promptly having completed the following assignment: Create a craft that features loops, something that turns upside down as part of its construction, or something impractical but fun.  Alternatively, please make some soup to warm up after all this time in the air.

---Herbology:  Gillyweed was made famous through its use by Harry Potter during the Triwizard Tournament to accomplish the Second Task. The Gillyweed that Dobby gives Harry resembles a ball of 'slimy, greyish-green rat tails.' The plant was discovered some time before 1845 by noted herbologist Beaumont Marjoribanks, though he did not understand its effects. It was Elladora Ketteridge who first ate some of the plant, then nearly suffocated before dunking her head in a bucket of water. Demonstrate your knowledge of Gillyweed in one of the following ways:

1) Craft something containing green in color. 2) Craft something long and thin, or something that uses an element that is long and thin, such as yarn, strips of paper, thin dowels, toothpicks, etc. 3) Craft something that helps make you more comfortable in a tricky environment (something warm that lets you function in the cold, or a comfy cushion for a hard chair. 4) Craft something that takes you out of your element, such as a craft or technique that isn't your go-to, a medium you've not tried before, or a craft for which you need to wear protective gear.

---History of Magic (HoM):  "I use the Pensieve. One simply siphons the excess thoughts from one's mind, pours them into the basin, and examines them at one's leisure. It becomes easier to spot patterns and links, you understand, when they are in this form."  - Albus Dumbledore

This semester we will be using a Pensieve in our study of history. It is a stone basin filled with a silvery substance that carries memories. Through the memories donated by our past headmasters we can actually relive their times at Hogwarts. For your assignment, please craft something that evokes one of your memories that you would like to share with class.

---Muggle Studies:  Arthur Weasley has been pestering many people with is question 'What exactly is the function of a rubber duck?'  As yet we have no final answer to this question, however it does present an opportunity for our Hogwarts students to do some research on the question. Please create something in the theme of ducks, or something yellow, or made of rubber. Or make something that could be used in conjunction with a relaxing bath.

---Potions:  When entering the dungeons you see Professor Inselaeffchen dripping a potion on a small pumpkin obtained from Hagrid's garden. Within seconds, the pumpkin is getting bigger...

Good morning, class! I've decided that we'll be looking at the Swelling Solution! It's a handy thing to use if you need something to be bigger... like this pumpkin here... how am I to carve this one for All Hallows?

For this term please create something that's "swollen" - something that has increases in it (such as in a knitting pattern), or increase a given pattern or recipe to a greater size/greater batch, or create something that "swells up" (for example puff pastry).

---Study of Ancient Runes (SoAR):  Runes are the shapes that make up the mystical alphabet. This semester we will be studying the alphabets still in use today. For your assignment you may either use text as a visible part of your project, or you can use text in the creation of it by reading complex instructions or recipes.

---Transfiguration:  The Hardening Charm will turn any object into solid stone. Hermione used this charm during the Battle of Hogwarts on a tapestry to stop a group of Death Eaters that were pursuing her.  This term please focus your attention on making something very hard out of something soft. This could be making a batch of hard candy, using clay (air dried, oven or kiln baked), or trying your hand at soap making.

~*Challenge Prompts*~
Every term we have certain challenges that repeat, such as House Pride & House Unity, and sometimes we have miscellaneous challenges that come up throughout the year.  You will find those posted here, along with all pertinent info about them.

~*House Pride Challenge*~
This challenge is all about YOUR Hogwarts House.  Your projects can be inspired by your House colors, mascots, founders, Heads of House, famous members, house ghosts, etc. You may complete this challenge once per term.  For example if you are a Gryffindor you could create a striped House scarf in red and gold, or you could create a purple quilt featuring a lion.

~*House Unity Challenge*~
This challenge is all the rest of Hogwarts!  House Unity projects should represent another Hogwarts House, or a combination of Houses.  They can be inspired by house colors, mascots, founders, Heads of House, past members, house ghosts, etc.  You may complete this challenge once per term.  For example, if you're a Gryffindor, you could create a House Unity scarf featuring a band of each Houses' colors, or you could create a baby quilt for a friend in blues & greens representing Ravenclaw & Slytherin.

Love TO DO List Challenge - 2019
This challenge runs through December 31, 2019
As crafters we all have so many things we want to make, that sometimes our crafty To Do lists can spiral out of control.  We become inspired, go and gather the supplies for many projects, and often we aren't able to finish them (let alone start them!) before other things come along that we also "have to" make, such as when we put aside an ongoing project to whip up a baby quilt for a co-worker who just announced she's expecting.

This year-long challenge aims to help you prioritize the projects you really want to get to, by providing a bit of extra incentive.  To participate please start by making a list of 10-14 projects that you would really love to make in 2019.  Post it here in the thread, and tell us a snippet about the things on your list.  Work hard throughout the year to get through all the projects youve set out for yourself.  Throughout the year you may submit those individual projects as regular HPC submissions whenever you complete them.  In your posts, mention that in addition to fulfilling a prompt, it is also part of your Love To Do List, and perhaps let us know how many youve accomplished so far, so we can cheer on your success.  If you finish your list by the end of the year, you will post a finished project header, with links to all your completed items on the list, and thereby earn an extra 100 House Points at the time of submission.  You may include up to 3 Works-in-Progress in your list, but the others should be things youve been thinking of making, but havent gotten around to starting yet, and fear that you might not get to without this extra incentive.

Over the course of the year, you may add items to your list, but your final list may not go beyond 14 items, and it must contain at least 10 items to start.  Please consider the items you add to your list carefully, and choose things you can really sink your teeth into.  (That's my way of saying, don't just assign yourself the task of making 10 ATCs, and have them done by the end of the week just to claim the bonus points.)  Since life can throw you unexpected curve balls, you can, over the course of the challenge, swap out one item on your list.

You do not have to write & post your list right away.  You may do so between now and November 1st.  Please note that you can't add items retroactively to a list.  So if you make your list on November 1st, you can't include items you've already completed between now and then.  The clock starts from the time you post your list.

~*Headmistress Challenges*~

Each month Headmistress Jennie offers a special Challenge.  Headmistress Challenges each last 1 month, are posted on the first of the month, and may be submitted until midnight of the last day of that month.  They earn 15 House Points just like Classes.  You may complete any class or challenge prompt once per term.

Hogwarts Castle Challenge
December 1-31

Hogwarts Castle is a magical place.  Both due to the inherent magical ability of the witches and wizards who live and study there, and to the feelings it engenders in those who inhabit it.  Many of those who feel lost and alone in the world, find their home when they arrive at Hogwarts.

In many ways Craftster is a great deal like Hogwarts.  Members come from near and far, to find their home, and their magical brethren, here on these pages of inspiration.  Each of us has felt the spark of magic when we see something beautiful one of our fellow Craftsters has made.  Each of us has felt at home when we post a project we are especially proud of, and the other members of our tribe express their awe and love over our work.

For this challenge, please take your love of Hogwarts, and of Craftster, to heart.  Craft something inspired by the joy and inspiration you find here, and if possible, please tell us what you love most about Craftster.

~*Floo Powder Challenges*~

Every 2 weeks, a new Floo challenge is posted, inspired by a different place.  Once a new challenge is posted, you have until midnight Central Standard Time that day to finish posting the old challenge.  Each challenge is worth 15 House Points.  You may complete any class or challenge prompt once per term.

Silent Evolution Coral Reef
November 18 - December 2

The Floo Powder adventure is starting to get out of hand!  Headmistress Jennie & Deputy Headmistress noodle-bug have found themselves off the coast of Cancun, Mexico, UNDERWATER, in the middle of an artificial coral reef!  The stunning work of living art, called Silent Evolution, was created by artist Jason deCaires Taylor.  It consists of 400 life sized sculptures of human figures, installed 9 meters below sea level.  The work is not only beautiful and visually powerful to the point of being haunting, but it also reminds us of our deep interdependency on the natural world.

For this challenge you have a few options.
-Craft something artificial, of something that exists in reality.  For example, you could sculpt a mini version of the birthday cake Hagrid brings Harry for his 11th birthday, made from polyclay.
-Craft something inspired by the colors of the oceans, blues, greens, teals, and whites.
-Craft something to exist within a specific natural setting, or for use by wildlife in your area.  For example, you could craft a bird or bat house, to blend into your yard and among the animals that live there.
-Craft something related to our current climate crisis.  This can take many forms, such as a sign to bring to a climate march, or a reusable item to replace something you currently use disposable versions of in your home.

~*Yule Term Holiday Challenges*~

Yule term is filled with holidays each month, including Halloween in October, Thanksgiving for our American members in November, Christmas, Yule, Chanukah & Kwanza in December and New Year's in January.  Throughout the term Headmistress Jennie will offer special Holiday Challenges.  The Holiday Challenges will each last 1 month, are posted on the first of the month, and may be submitted until midnight of the last day of that month.  They earn 15 House Points just like Classes.  You may complete any class or challenge prompt once per term.

Hagrid's 12 Christmas Trees Challenge
December 1-31

Each year Hagrid brings 12 trees to the castle to decorate the Great Hall for the Christmas holidays.  This year we will be taking inspiration from items typically used to decorate Christmas trees, for a mini-series of challenges.  Each challenge is worth 15 points, and each may be done once. We have tried to keep the prompts very broad, so that you can fit them to any number of autumn & winter holiday projects. Please note that while the theme for this challenge series is based on Christmas, you are welcome to fulfill these prompts for any holidays, or gift giving reasons, including for St. Nicholas Day, Winter Solstice, Yule, Chanukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year, birthdays, anniversaries, or any other events you may celebrate!

1. Angel - Each of us has someone in our lives wed consider our real-life Guardian Angel, be it a parent, partner, spouse, grandparent, care-giver, or best friend. Craft something for the Angel in your own life.

2. Baubles - Baubles can be simple glass spheres or intricate blown glass creations, depending on the style you are aiming for. During a season where we are often crafting so much to please others, its also important to please ourselves too, lest we lose our joy in the season.  For this challenge please craft something that reflects your personal style, even if you arent able to keep it for yourself.

3. Bells - Bells are visually beautiful, but they also please the ears by tinkling any time you brush past the tree. Craft something that appeals to two senses at once: this could be a meal that looks as good as it tastes, beautifully colored and scented bath products, or a sewing project that combines a pattern that is pleasing to the eye with luxuriously textured fabric.

4. Candles - Candles give our homes a soft warm glow during the short days and long dark nights of winter. Please craft something that will give the recipient a warm & happy glow.

5. Fake Snow - Fake it till you make it!  For this challenge please craft something simple with a purchased supply to give as gifts. You must still take min 30 mins for the project! Some ideas including making some oreo truffles or Faux Turtle Candies for your co-workers, or you could create hand stamped & painted envelopes to present purchased gift cards in.

6. Garland - Traditionally garlands are made from leaves and flowers.  During winter evergreen boughs and holly are used to bring color and nature into the home. Craft something inspired by the wintery natural world local to you, and tell us about what in your area sparked your imagination.

7. Icicles - Craft something that needs to be kept at just the right temperature for at least for some portion of the time.  This could include a snowman, frozen margaritas, baked cookies, or crisply ironed fabric.

8. Lights - What would a Christmas tree be without lights?  Without these twinkling little wonders, we would be hard pressed to see the lovely ornaments decorating the boughs.  For this challenge please craft something that will light up the holiday (or heart) of the recipient.

9. Ribbon - Ribbon is such a handy craft supply, great for literally tying everything together, or putting a finishing touch on a project.  Create something that ties other items together.  This could be literally connecting different components in a gift, such as decorating a basket you plan to fill with baked goods for your neighbor, or more figuratively uniting things, such as making a meal or special recipe that draws your family  and friends together.

10. Star - Stars shine the brightest in the darkness. For this challenge please craft something that lets one of your talents shine.  This can be any craft or medium you excel at.

11. Tinsel -  All that glitters is not gold... But it probably is pretty awesome! Craft with glitter, or another sparkling medium, as exuberantly as you please!  (Other sparkling items could include AB finished beads, sequins, glass or prisms, or even sparkling wine!)

12. Tree Skirt - Tree skirts are used to make a functional object (the base or pot of a tree) look good, and creates a welcome surface to place gifts on. For this challenge please craft something that is both functional and decorative, OR that welcomes folks into your home!

~*Iron Chef Hogwarts*~

Each month Kitchen Elf Abbeeroad reveals a secret ingredient. Dishes made with this secret ingredient and posted as HPC projects will earn 15 House Points just like Classes. The Iron Chef Challenges last 1 month. The are posted on the first of the month, and may be submitted until midnight of the last day of that month.

The Secret Ingredient for December is...

"A single leaf can add rich flavor to soups and stews. For more intensity, I toast and grind fresh bay leaves to add to cucumber-yogurt sauce." - Michael Psilakis, Kefi and FISHTAG, New York City

Potatoes Roasted with Olive Oil and Bay Leaves

Bay Leaf Chicken with Orange Parsley Salad

West Indian Bay Leaf Tea

What are OWLs and NEWTs?

  • Ordinary Wizarding Levels (OWLs) and Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests (NEWTs) are advanced crafting projects
  • OWLs and NEWTs are supposed to be more complex and challenging than typical crafting projects. They can be in any category or genre that you wish
  • You are to choose the course of study you wish to take in a particular subject. Research your desired subject, find a facet of that subject that you wish focus your advanced studies. Form a plan of action, and make your proposal. The possibilities are endless!

How long should an OWL or NEWT take?

  • OWLs and NEWTs are more time-consuming than regular HPC classes and challenges. There is no hard and fast rule on how many hours a project should take, because speed and difficulty levels are too subjective. What we are really looking for is a project that will be a personal challenge to you. That being said...
  • OWLs should generally take 3-4 weeks to complete
  • NEWTs should generally take more than a month to complete

Proposing an OWL or NEWT

  • You must propose your OWL or NEWT before starting so that we may be your cheerleaders and help encourage you during this more challenging craft adventure
  • IMPORTANT: To be eligible to take your NEWT, you must have completed one OWL.  If you have not completed an OWL, you cannot propose a NEWT
  • When you have settled on a challenging project that will take the required amount of time that you would like to propose, post in the HPC thread using the following header:

~*OWL/NEWT PROPOSAL*~
Project Name:
House:
Brief Description: (how it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques used, materials using, plan of action, expected timeline, etc.)

  • Your proposed project will be added to the ongoing list of proposed OWLs/NEWTs by the Advanced Studies Examiner, Abbeeroad
  • Please note, you may only work on 1 OWL and 1 NEWT at a time. Please do not propose new OWLs/NEWTs until your current ones are complete
  • You may propose an OWL or NEWT at any time during the semester
  • OWLs and NEWTs can carry over to the next semester
  • If you decide to abandon and OWL or NEWT project, notify your Advanced Studies Examiner, Abbeeroad, and the log will be erased from the record. Once you have submitted to have an old OWL or NEWT erased, you can propose a new one
  • Please note, after 3 years, old OWLs/NEWTs will be removed from the log automatically unless an extension is requested by an active HPC member

Completing an OWL or NEWT

  • Once you propose, you may start your OWL or NEWT right away! You do not need to wait for approval to begin crafting
  • Feel free to add progress pics in the HPC thread. Advanced Studies Fridays is a great time to share!
  • Once your project is complete, post a picture of your project in the HPC using the header provided below

~*COMPLETED OWL/NEWT*~
House:
Project Name:
Project Page Link: (if available)
Brief Description: (how it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques used, any fun tips, etc.)
Project Picture:

Posting completed OWLs will earn your House 100 points. Completed NEWTs will earn 150 points!
