Having lost my life's work and all my tools and materials in that fire, I've been slowly trying to arrange a space for myself and purchase necessary tools and materials. I won't ever be able to replace what was lost, but moving forward is necessary.

Currently I'm honing wet felting skills. I had only done a little wet felting in relationship to classes I created for CAE. I'm doing more wet felting now for the sake of permanence of the pieces I make. Mostly I have been working on brooches. Their size being relatively small allows me to experiment and refine techniques more easily than with larger projects.

Here are some of my brooch experiments:

I love how some of the circular ones feel familiar (some look like a fruit) but yet so unique too!

I love the organic structure... I have never tried needle felting but it is on my list of things to do!

Glad to read you are slowly but surely recovering from your loss!
I love your wet felt creations. Especially the 'mushroom cap' ones.

Lovely work & great designs. You have inspired me to get out my roving and felting kit - haven't done any felting in 10 years  Smiley

Thanks!

I'm setting up my studio in what was the dining room. It doesn't have the privacy of my previous studio and I have to remind myself that the cats will get into everything given even the slightest chance, but it will work.

Here's another brooch. Because this photo was done from overhead, you can't see that the middle white section is really like a shallow bowl.

I recently bought a light box for photographing my pieces, but haven't used it yet. Soon!

Those are absolutely amazing. The fine stitching details and beads are perfect additions to the felting. So beautiful and organic!

Those are absolutely beautiful! I've never tried wet felting, but the results are very nifty. I love the organic, unique, and varying designs you've created. Also, the flounder made me giggle. Grin

I am so happy that you are back at making art! Your positivity after such a tragic event is truly inspiring. And your work! It's wonderful. The red and white gills in the white cap are surely a mushroom! The rest of those organic fungalish shapes are entrancing but that is by far my favourite of all. Lovely creations.

Thank you so much!!

I am struggling a bit to find my direction, but once I am able to work more consistently I hope that will become obvious to even me.  Wink

My son and I are determined to move ahead. We're rethinking our home to make space for my work and for his activities. Twice a week his friends gather to play games together and the house is filled with laughter! The living room, which never saw a lot of use, is the center of a lot of activity now. It's also an opportunity to clear out a lot of stuff. As I'm getting older that's a very good thing to get done.

This week I've been steam cleaning rugs and not getting much creative work in at all. Hopefully soon!

These brooches are fantastic Harlan!

This is the first I heard about you loosing everything in a fire, and I'm very saddened to hear it! You will rebuild, but I can only imagine the emotional devastation you had. Much love!

Thanks!

My son and I won't ever be completely over that fire, but we're determined to move forward in a positive manner. I don't quite feel centered yet, not the way I used to when I was painting or when I was creating classes for CAE. I hope that will come in time. Right now I'm concentrating on gaining skills and hoping to put together another book.

Thank you!!

It was. In a few short hours more than 40 years was lost. Pretty much my life's work. We lived more in the office/studio than in the house so that's where family photos were, our computers, so many things that were important to our lives.

But you have to pick up and move on.
