Back in February, a couple of friends and I signed up for a class to make a tumbler with silver leaf, which I've never done before. Just by luck, the silver leaf attached to my cup at a slight angle, which gave it a nice design. And, I was able to slightly flare the top to give the glass a little bit of shaping. It's about 6" tall, and I just love how it came out!

We had some extra time, so we got to make a paperweight. However, this is a pretty small paperweight (the instructor gathered the glass mostly on the punty, so a lot of the glass was wasted). It's about a 1.5" tall, and less than 2" wide. But, it's cute and I like the colors!

They're beautiful! And I am especially smitten with the tumbler.

Thank you! I picked out 2 colors, but they blended a bit more than I expected. The way the silver leaf landed on the hot glass was a happy accident.

This is amazing! I've always wanted to try glass blowing, and it looks like you did really well. I especially love the paperweight, it's very fall and looks a little like some kind of caramel candy!

These are really cool! You got a great effect on the glass, and the paperweight is a fun extra. Soothing colors for both, and I love the swirl in the weight. Someday I'd love to try glass blowing! Someday...

They are fantastic! I really like hot glass work. I'm a bit terrified of making any myself but wow, the results are almost too tempting for me to resist at least giving it a try.

Thanks, everyone! I did my first glass blowing class with some people from work- we made glass flowers and a paperweight, and then we sort of helped the instructors make each of us a ball ornament. The next class I took was making bowls, we did some of the work, but the instructor is the one who actually created the bowl for shape for us. Then, my sister and I took a weekend class in Brooklyn. I made a couple of paperweights and a little vase.

Every time I take a class, I feel a little more confident (although I still HATE to gather the glass from the furnace), so I played a little with the shape of the cup. As for the silver leaf, it was in uneven blocks on most of the other cups (you don't get time to fuss with the placement because there's a danger the sheet of silver leaf will blow way), so it really was just dumb luck that mine looked so pretty Smiley

If you're afraid of giving it a try, as long as you don't put your hands in the wrong spot (I put my hand on a metal table right after hot glass had been rolled on it... ouch...), it's really fun (even better if the instructor gathers the glass for you Smiley ), so I say, if you can find a place to take a class (take it with a buddy unless you don't mind working with strangers Wink ), go for it!
