Ongoing OTT Swap--Coming Mid-August!

I've been expanding my sewing skills these past two years, and that has included zippers, and exploring using clear vinyl. I've only used clear vinyl less than a handful of times. I was in the I Love Houseplants swap, and decided to make my partner craftylittlemonkey a zip pouch to go with the pencil pouch I made her. I didn't have enough cactus fabric make the pouch like I normally do, so I decided to try making one with a vinyl see through front.

At first, I just sewed the vinyl to my backing and then went on to complete the pouch as usual. There were really bad seams and it just looked raw. I didn't like it. I tried adding bias tape on the edges, but I didn't really have a wide enough one and not enough of the blue to make it. I wanted to use the blue to match the blue I used in the zipper pencil  pouch. I settled on green, but ended up sewing the bias tape accidentally onto the inside of the pouch and it looked ridiculous, and I just could not send that. (I'm sharing it in this post. It is the bottom right zip pouch in the collage.)

So, then I realized I needed to just make a border around the vinyl, then I could complete mostly as normal.  I still needed a little help with the zipper because I did not have an actual lining.  So, I sorta followed  tutorial for the "open wide pouch" and made my first pouch with a zipper outside! Win!

Bordering the vinyl and doing it this way made it SO CUTE and very hard to send away. I need to get more of this fabric, I think!

So, thanks for looking, here it is:

(Notice how cool it looks that it was raining in the background of the one I sent? I love it!)

What a great way to use every bit of that sweet cacti print! It has been years since I sewed with clear vinyl, but now you have me thinkin'. I even have some I picked up from the remnants bin years ago. Hmmmmmm...

It turned out SO GOOD! It lives in my purse, despite some people I live with who shall remain nameless *cough-daughter-cough* trying to steal it Wink.
