The hands are actually holding the caught fish.  Or at least that's what I was headed for.  The final photo is on page one, showing the fish at the top and the stones in place grounding the pole back to the earth.  Thanks for your comments.

I see that now. I hadn't noticed the fish at first because the hands stood out to me as so cool. It's just one of those great pieces younsee something new each time you look, I guess!
