UPDATED:  Here is the final photo of this totem pole carve

I have started a massive project, and I realize that I am not posting a completed project, but I'm hoping that the folks in charge will allow me to post as I go along.  This project will most likely take me the rest of the summer to finish.

It will be something akin to a totem pole.  I have been commissioned to build this and with any luck, it will turn out as I have planned it.

I started with a log that was 23 1/2 feet long.  It has been debarked, scraped and in some cases, sanded.  I have started laying out patterns and cutting them into the log.

Here are the first photos:

What I started with:

How it looks today:

A few images of what I've already done:

One of two crabs:

Momma and baby humpback whale:

An octopus, using the knot found in the wood:

I will be adding photos to this post as I go along, so stay with me for awhile.

Wow! How did you even move that thing? A storm once blew over a tree in my yard, and my husband and son and I could not even budge it, it was so heavy. Did you remove the bark yourself?

The whole thing reminds me of an antique carved horn.

It was moved by truck from where it came down.  Since this is a commission piece, I have had some help getting it to its current location.  We also made a cradle for it, so that I can move it as I work.  We cut it down to a 17 foot piece, and five to six feet of it will go into the ground.  This makes it stable.

I did all of the debarking and scraping, as well as laying out the patterns and roughing in the shapes.  I've done a lot of research to be sure that I was putting the right animals on it.  It is for an RV park in a small coastal town in Oregon.  The name Neskowin means many fish, and there will be a history of sealife on this piece.
