I've had a set of wooden combs in my supply basket for ages. Making a kanzashi comb (kushi) has been on my kanzashi bucket list for a while, and I've just never gotten around to it.

I started with a plain brown wooden comb, painted it black, then added the flowers and pine foliage.

Once those bits were in place, I filled in around them with white petals, varnished the comb's teeth a bit, added a nylon cord liner around the design, and then the details - mizuhiki, beadcaps and rhinestones.

I'm pleased with how it turned out and I've been brainstorming some ideas for new kushi. Smiley

Here's one more photo. The back also has one plum blossom but I forgot to get a photo of it.

Excellent work! I have a huge collection of tsumami kanzashi from my time living in Japan, and this measures up to them! You've done a brilliant job making all the folded shapes very neat and equal in size/tightness. Your overall design is wonderfully balanced, as well. Would love to see a picture of someone wearing it. Cheesy

Also, I'm curious what kind of glue you are using for the petals? Do you use traditional rice paste, or something else?

Thank you Cheesy I do use traditional rice glue. Nori by Yasutomo is the brand I normally use.

Absolutely stunning! Everything is so beautifully crisp and even. I especially love the little variegated-pink petals - were they a different technique?
