My big boy turned five this February. Smiley  He had a dinosaur-themed party at the Perot Museum here in Dallas, and it was a fun event.  The museum staff did a lot of activities with the kids, and I brought in a "smoking" volcano cake and had paint your own cookies for them to enjoy.  It was a blast. Smiley

The volcano cake was a yellow cake (tinted red and orange and marbled so that it looked kinda lava-ish) made in a princess cake pan (the kind that make a big skirt that you stick a Barbie doll in).  It was great to already have a hole baked in the top.  I frosted it roughly with chocolate frosting and stuck a tiny cup in the top (I think a large medicine cup would work or a shot glass--I just happened to have a teeny tiny disposable red solo cup that fit.)  I used pre-colored candy melts in orange and red and dripped them down the edge for  lava and to disguise the cup.  I think filling the cake with white chocolate ganache tinted red to flow out when you cut it would be neat.  I just didn't do that. Smiley  The grand finale was putting an ice-cube sized bit of dry ice in the cup and adding some hot water for "smoke" when my son blew out the candles.  I didn't get to take many photos during the party, so this is a still from my husband's video of the birthday song.  I promise my kid was having a good time.   Grin

For the paint your own cookies, I made 800 billion sugar cookies using a t-rex cookie cutter that makes them 3d (found here: https://www.amazon.com/Home-X-Dinosaur-Cutters-Deliciously-Kitchen/dp/B00WTCN752/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=3d+dinosaur+cookie&qid=1551737807&s=gateway&sr=8-5).  I frosted them very plainly with white royal icing and let them dry.  It took like three days of baking and frosting and drying.  My kids will only get these for their birthdays, lol.  I then made a ton of food coloring paint palettes for the kids to use like watercolors.  I bought cheap paint wells and filled them with dollops of white royal icing.  Once the icing dried (overnight), I painted them generously with slightly watered down gel food coloring (I used lemon extract to thin the gel, but you could use vodka or other colorless spirit--this was just for kids).  That took another night for them to dry.   The palettes got packaged in a cellophane bag with a paint brush and the kiddos painted their cookies just like watercolors with a bit of water to dilute the dried paint.  I think some of the adults had just as much fun. Smiley

Paint palettes drying:

Kids doing a dry run of the process for me - you can see what the cookies ultimately looked like when painted.

And not from the party - but this is what the 3d cookies look like when they are assembled.  Super cute, right?

There's not much in this world that can't be improved by either chocolate, bacon or glitter.
