I wanted to challenge myself this year by completing a collection of canvas and kanzashi pieces that fit together, and see if I could enter some local exhibitions. I call the collection The Pathos of Things, which is the literal translation of the Japanese concept Mono No Aware. The collection is going to follow the themes of seasonal change and the impermanence of life. This is my first finished piece for the collection, and it turned out pretty much exactly how I pictured it in my mind.

Kanzashi isn't really well known in my area, and part of my personal art mission is to try and spread awareness of the art form. :3

This is the kanzashi by itself, which features a cicada. The body shape on the cicada isn't perfect, but I think the body does have the segmented look I was going for. I had to do a few experiments to figure out the wings; I was going to put the holo film on then dip them in clear resin, but it didn't go well. So, I just applied the holo film then coated it with clear varnish instead.

And here is the canvas by itself. It's been painted to look like a piece of lacquer ware. I think it looks pretty close! It has tsumami craft flowers applied directly to the canvas, and the hole where the pin slides in is right along the edge of the large flower. The canvas is 5"x7" and gallery wrapped, so it has the lacquer ware design on the sides as well. It doesn't require a frame.

And here they are together. Smiley Overall super pleased with the results. I have to finish one more for the exhibition, which gets juried in April.

They are BEAUTIFUL!  I love the shine you captured on the canvas.  It really looks like lacquer!  And the cicada is just fantastic.  I bet sheepBlue would fall in love with it too.

It's truly stunning! The color palette works very well, and of course the individual elements are beautiful as always. The shimmery wings are especially delightful.
