Last year I made these cards for the super-fun Craftster Trading Card swap. I was an overly-photographed child, and I have no need for the copious awkward and embarrassing photos, full of bad memories, now in my possession from the '80s and '90s. Thus, I realized it was time to do something new with them!

My initial efforts to use childhood photos in art were far too dark, and didn't leave me feeling very good. With this swap, I was able to get more lighthearted and create new worlds for the kid in the photos, bringing in parts of who I am now. I wouldn't say it was cathartic, because there was nothing draining about the process, but it was healing in a different way. I got to stop taking the photos at face value and remix them with some self-deprecating (but good-natured) humor and elements of what I love to do and how I see life from the other side of the dark tunnel I was in.  Smiley I think this helps the younger versions of me that I carry around in my psyche calm down and trust the adult-me more, and helps the adult-me to be a better parent to them!

I still have many hundreds of photos to use up, but this was a really fun start!

Nice work.  There is something about letting go that makes you free to be who you want to be.  I am learning this lesson at a very old stage of my life.

There's not much in this world that can't be improved by either chocolate, bacon or glitter.

Thanks, y'all.  Smiley I'm still looking for ways to use original print photos in non-digital art in appealing ways. It bugs me that the glossy surface stands out so much; I'm going to look for a high-gloss acrylic sealant to better blend all the elements.
