I spent a good amount of time trying to figure out a cute costume that would work with my 5 year old’s wheelchair (he doesn't understand the concept of Halloween or a costume, hence me being the one to make the decision rather than him). I finally came up with the idea of an aviator costume complete with an airplane. My husband came up with a design and managed to create an amazing plane, complete with a spinnable propeller! I was extremely skeptical when he said he was going to make it without wings for practical purposes (ie. entering through doorways) and utterly impressed when after seeing the design I realized that he not only managed it, but I didn’t even notice the lack of wings!

The airplane body is made from a trash can and the details and framework are made from pvc piping. My husband did the designing, cutting, and painting and I helped put it all together.

The supporting framework (please excuse the messy shop in these pics!)

Once the ‘plane’ was created, I worked on the face. I decided to spray paint some butcher paper and cut the face out of it. I used satin spray paint because I wanted the face to be matte like the plane body. I used my Silhouette software to design the shark face and the machine to cut it out (no easy feat because for whatever reason, anytime I have a project with a time crunch I run into issue upon issue with my silhouette machine, bleh!). Once I finally got it cut out, I used Elmer’s spray adhesive to attach the face.

As for the rest of the costume, I purchased the jacket, scarf, and aviator beanie from Amazon.

Whoooosh!

Now, that is one impressive costume!  I'd never thought about it before, but a wheelchair frame does provide all sorts of interesting customization possibilities.

That is fab!  And honestly, I wouldn't have noticed there were no wings if you hadn't mentioned it - the overall effect is so good.
