My kid has been asking since at least June to be a haunted house for Halloween. And not just any haunted house -- a red one with ghosts and kitty cats in the windows. So although I myself have not dressed up for halloween since 2006 or so, I wanted him to be able to celebrate how he wanted. I didn't have a box small enough to fit him, so I used red felt. That seemed scratchy, so I used gray shirting to line it and sandwiched foam interfacing for stability with flexibility. I got a little ridiculous with the front porch, which is foam, and the bump out diorama on top. His hat is meant to be the roof. I cut out ghosts and cats from some halloween fabric and covered the windows with plastic wrap to keep little fingers out. And then I added shoulder straps. Many glue sticks were sacrificed. It seemed to satisfy him and a dangerous precedent has been set for how far mom will go to make a halloween costume.

I am pretty sure most parents would have balked at such an abstract idea for a costume but you nailed it!
