thanate and I decided that alongside the IYP swap we'd unofficially partner so we'd have a flexible deadline. We could have joined for reals though because we both finished before the send-outs, lol. Motivated crafters!
Anyhoo, one item she said she might like was a very large fabric basket and after a little stalking I decided to go rainbow and use lots of little pieces collected over the years from other projects, received in swaps, etc. I really like how it turned out.

It's so fun, like a memory quilt!

One challenge with such a large basket is keeping it stiff and upright. I used many layers of interfacing including fusible felt and some basic grid quilting.

To keep it very firm even when filled, I also devised what I think are clever channels on the inside to hold optional dowels.
There are 3 evenly spaced around the inside.

The dowels are cut to just large enough that the top pocket can be folded out of the way then wriggled over the end of the dowel which is long enough not to slip free. I sanded to ends of the wood to round it so it won't catch or tear at the fabric in that tight fit. And it was a tight fit, I had to sand the sides of one dowel where I'd sewn the channel with a slightly larger seam allowance and I could not get it to go in!

It's really tall, I think about 16". If desired, the dowels can be removed and the top and handles folded down.

I hope my partner will find it useful and durable. It was a very enjoyable challenge, I might try it again sometime for myself.

It would hold a LOT of yarn! An entire afghan would fit into it I'm sure Cheesy.

Wow, I'm very impressed by your engineering skills in adding the removable dowels! It's gorgeous, too.

Oh thank you so much! I really puzzled over how to make that work & was pretty happy with the solution that I figured out.
