My new craft of choice has been making books. Here is one sent to JoyfulClover in a private swap. I was inspired by her love of unusual colours and tiny stitches. The front and back cover both have a panel of wee patchwork stitched with embroidery floss and around most of the pieces with plain sewing thread.

The cover is hard cardboard with some of my favourite fabric over it. There is a strip of lace on the spine with 2 ribbons woven through for bookmarks.

The tiny patchwork is made up of so many special bits of fabric. It's like a trip down memory lane for me, I see projects made for swaps and scraps sent to me by members here. This book could tell so many stories.

There are 5 3 page signatures for a total of 30 pages made from 2 brown bags stuck together with fusible webbing and machine stitched around the edge. The bags are from the liquor store because, you know, wine and crafting  Grin Roll Eyes

Signatures were sewn to a binding which was glued to the cover and then panels adhered on top of that.

Before sticking those down I sewed on small piece of stamped fabric with a message of Joy, we share that name which I think is just about the coolest thing ever.

This one was "properly" bound which I am very happy to have tried and accomplished. I'm still a novice but I feel like I'm getting better at it the more I try.

Thanks so much for saying so. I find pairing fabrics really challenging and always second guess what I've done. Nice to hear you think I'm good at that part Smiley.

Love this idea for my cousin. I was thinking of buying her a Christmas apron as she loves cooking but I know she would a little book to store all her recipes and with it being handmade she would treasure it forever! Also found some recipes to pop in there too so I thought I might share them with you! Mind you... think I will have to do both now!

Thank you all Smiley.

A matching recipe book and apron would be a lovely gift.

I'd love to see more book projects here. I like the junk journals, altered volumes & smash books but there's only a bit of hand binding. I will do more, I have a stack of supplies prepped just waiting for inspiration to strike.

That is a lovely book!  All the details and sharing fabric you love makes it a very special book.  There are so many different kinds of book bindings to try.  I'm sure you will be posting more books for us to see.

I am also a fan. It seems as though you try everything and succeed.
Wow - love this little book.

And that's a different way of binding - so now I have to try it.

I'm very glad it's liked. I keep collecting and washing brown paper bags so I'm sure there will be more books in the near future.

Thank you all Smiley.

I should mention, I followed many of the steps in this tutorial for the hidden spine technique. It's long but very detailed.
Smmarrt I posted a link to her stuff in the mixed media-along but here it is again if you want more info on the how-to Smiley.

Thank you Smiley. I've been collecting so many brown paper bags. I have free time over the holidays, maybe I see some more books on the horizon...

This is so pretty and special! I just became aware of how fun book making could be when I attended an art conference in Nov. I only just then learned what signatures are , and how to make a simple book with rubber bands to hold them down. I will start there, then work my way up, perhaps!

I really love the beauty of yours.
