In the recent Vintage Halloween Swap, https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=455843.20, I was inspired to make the Headless Horseman. I have had a box of thread cones in my stash forever. In fact, I ended up searching the whole house for them, and finally found them hidden under a pile of other stuff at the back of a basement shelf. Whew. I've always intended to make Christmas elves, Santas, or gnome houses or something out of them. But a headless horseman was perfect.

The cone took many layers of white paint to cover up the color coding bands, then several more for his boots, pants, and shirt. He got a red felt vest with black bead buttons and a gray felt great coat with trim and gold bead buttons. His skeletal arms are heavy fencing wire. A fake leather belt, a glow-in-the-dark lasso and he was all set.

But wait, he has no head! So a Christmas apple ornament came to the rescue. The silly red paint on the original apple kept bleeding through, but I finally got the right colors. His eyes and mouth have several layers of glow-in-the-dark paint. He's now ready to terrorize the neighboorhood on Halloween. Watch out, Ichabod!

Thank you Pottermouth for the great pictures. I forgot to take pictures...woe is me.

Kornelia watched the whole process and was completely terrified of the headless guy, but jumped in the box anyway to ride along. I think she wants to go trick or treating with pottermouth.

And in the dark.....

The cones in their unadorned glory.

HOLY MACARONI! What a great reuse/upcycle project! He's just soooo great and I hope you make and share some of those other projects you were talking about!

Should you decide to make more, you might consider stain-blocking primer (house paint type) to minimize the layers of painting. There are water-based versions for minimal stink and often they are paintable in an hour.

And duh, I have some in the basement. My mind often separates wall painting from crafting painting...which is silly since I scour the house for craft items (anything goes) and my DW often comes to me and asks " do you have anything like this?" She makes cigar box ukuleles and other fun stuff.
