I've created a new carousel horse from a child's Wonder Horse.  Hubby helped by removing the metal framework & mounting him on a pole from an old floor lamp---stripped of the wires & light fixture.  He also made an optional wooden base to give it stability.
I've found that small plastic "caps" are available at Lowes that are used after blowing insulation into a home.  They're 1" in diameter---the perfect size for covering the openings left from removing the framework.
I sprayed him an off white color, painted the embossing on the saddle& halter & added a scroll pattern to areas to disguise the plastic insulation caps.  The ombre main & tail were my daughter's idea &, I think, very effective.
I found the openwork metal ball at a local outlet store & bolted it to the top.  A couple  of bows & braided reins finished him.

Wow, that's super interesting to look at. What a conversation piece! Which bottom part did you decide on, the metal ring or the box? Either looks great.

Thanks for the lovely comments.  This is my 3rd carousel horse---photos of the others are in my album.  I made the others to be "for show" only & sold the first to a friend for that purpose.  I posted the 2nd for sale online & found that professional photographers want them for photo shoots.  A photographer bought it intending to make a base to stabilize it.   I have such a talented husband, I decided to get ahead of the game & make it ready to use---thus the base.  The pole comes in sections.  The lamp base just sits in the box.  The lid slides down over the bottom section of the pole & is screwed to the box.  This keeps the pole from moving & stabilizes all of it.  The heavy plywood won't let it move.  Then the horse slides down over the next section of the pole & the top section screws on top of that.  It can also be used without the base.

Beautiful custom carousel horsey and a wonderful way to repurpose a Wonder Horse.  Is it sturdy enough to actually bear a child's weight?

For anyone that might not know, this is what a Wonder Horse looks like mounted on its rocking frame:

I didn't think to post a photo of the original horse.  Thanks.  Hubby drilled a hole in the pole & inserted  pin so the horse won't slide down.  Then we cut a board that fits between the horse & pin to disperse the weight.  That way it will hold small children---it isn't meant for larger ones.  I've also stressed that it isn't a toy.
The insulation caps pop right into the holes left when it's removed from the framework. I follow the embossing on the saddle & bridle when I paint it & the rest is inspiration.  I just try to disguise the caps with paint.
