After I posted a photo of my Sharpie collection in another project post, several people commented that I could make a heck of a lot of Sharpie crafts, so I decided to give it a try.

I wanted to know if I could use a vinyl shape as a way to create an image on the coaster. I did a practice coaster the other day to see if it would work. It did, so I did it 8 more times Smiley

I used my Silhouette to cut out a dragonfly (I just used white Contact paper), and stuck one on each tile:

Then, I colored all over the tile with the Sharpies:

Next, I dripped 90% isopropyl alcohol all over them (I didn't have a dropper, so I soaked a cotton ball and squeezed drops all over the coasters).

And then, once they were dry, I hit them with a coat of acrylic sealant. I'll be adding felt to the back of them soon. I"m offering up a set of 4 as a raffle prize in the Nerd Games, and the winner can choose their 4 tiles, and the color of felt for the backing.

Thanks! Im glad I did a practice one first. I dripped on way too much alcohol, so I was more careful on these.

Wow! Those are pretty! Did you leave the vinyl butterfly on or did it just serve as a resist?

Thank you! The vinyl just served as a resist. I peeled it off right before I applied the acrylic sealer.

Ill try to remember to take a close up shot!

Here's a close-up. My phone had trouble getting in focus, but the edge of the dragonfly is pretty crisp.

It was interesting to see that one particular color was much more resistant to the spreading than the others. I think that every coaster has one mark on it (the same color) that didn't spread.

And, I can imagine making all kinds of variations with this- monograms, silhouettes, funny sayings (Mistress T, I'll be waiting...). Adding in the vinyl mask/resist/reverse stencil/whatever it's called leads to a wide variety of options!

Thanks! They were pretty soothing to make, too. Just watching the colors spread and blend is mesmerizing!
