Every time I see pictures of neat little collections of crocheted rocks, I think, "I want to make those!" Well, I finally gave it a try, and while it's not 100% perfect, it's okay for my first go, and I learned a few things...

The pattern I used was from here, but I also checked out these sites for inspiration, as well: here, here and here. Once I find some bigger rocks, I'll be trying some of those techniques.

I wasn't sure how I'd like it, so I bought some cheaper crochet cotton. I didn't have the recommended hook size, so I used the next size up, since I crochet tightly anyway.

The pattern is done in 2 parts- the heart and the mesh- and then those are stitched together:

I ended up not using all of the rounds of the mesh, because my rock was smaller than a bar of soap. Also, I had to fuss with the back to get it to stay connected, so it's not the prettiest on the reverse side.

I've left it as an Abandoned Art project, but I don't have a photo of it in place (in a restaurant bathroom) because my phone battery was dead. I only have the photo of it packaged up...

Thank you! If you could see the back, you'd see the bits of fudging I had to do. But, I am inspired to do it again, as soon as I find some better rocks. I might have to head to a river st some point to find some...

I like Kit-Kat, unless I'm with 4 or more people.

Your covered rock is lovely! It is also great to see you've left it for a stranger to discover. It would make my day to find it, that's for sure!

Thanks, pottermouth! I left it at a nature center in NH. I do hope that whoever finds it will post a picture on the FB Art Abandonment group, because I don't have a photo of it in place.

Thanks, gozer! In one of the videos I watched, a lady crocheted over large river rocks, then put them back in the river. Future goal!

It would make my day to find that! I haven't heard of the abandoned art project but I'm definitely intrigued! I'm going to look into that!

I ran across the Art Abandonment group on Facebook (I think someone on Craftster mentioned it). Its fun to see what people abandon, but even more fun to hear back from the people who find things!
