This was made for Curiousfae for the 10th Anniversary TM Patch swap. I was insanely inspired (or inspired to the point of insanity?) by her themes and Pinterest, etc.

When you pull and push the dangling red bead, the wings move up and down.

The background is a photograph that my son took, of a mural on the side of a local movie theater.

I didnt take any pictures of how I did it, but I based the mechanism on old jumping jack toys.

There are two holes in each wing, hidden underneath the heart. One acts as a pivot point and the other (closest to the edge) is where the T-shaped rod-and-red-bead assembly is attached.

I sewed a strip of stiffening material inside the patch so it would hold up to the tugging, and also inside the wings.

Maybe Ill make something similar soon so I can take pictures of the process. It wasnt as easy as I first imagined it might be! (Nothing ever is, right?)

At first, it seemed like the wings would move a lot, but once everything was assembled, it was clear that the range of movement would be much  more limited.

Still, I was pleased that I was able to get it to work at least a little bit. And Curiousfae liked it, which is the most important thing!

That is awesome - love the steampunk feel to it and that it is so interactive.

I just am so incredibly in love with so many aspects if this piece.  The incorporation of your son's photography - of another art piece! I love the pieced heart not done in expected colors, with all the texture. And don't get me started on the interactive component.

Dead nice.

Wow, this is so great.  I thought the heart was made of polymer clay at first.  I love the textures, and how incredible that it moves.

Wow! This is some amazing work! I love that you made it so the wings move. Also, that you took the skyline from the mural. Well thought out and executed.

Haha...so now you can see the depth of this obsession of mine with making things that move! I should try to find a really old piece I once made that had a mechanism that was powered by sand. It was very cool, but the mechanism was way fragile and it broke very quickly. If I can dig it up maybe Ill make a thread for it, despite how pitiful and broken it is now... [Toddling off to the attic to look for it.]
