This is a very simple solution to a common problem. Ants love sugar water, and I don't love ants floating in the hummingbird feeder!

To make a moat that the ants can't cross, I used a plastic food tub, two cup hooks, a synthetic cork, a bit of hot glue for security and waterproofing, and some ribbon for prettiness and further bird attraction.

I was concerned that just screwing the small hooks into the cork wouldn't hold up my heavy glass feeder, but it's been fine for weeks now!

After the initial ant pile-in, the rest learned to turn around.

Here is the original source for this idea!

Nice solution!  As I've never fed that type of bird (they're kind of uncommon here), I never knew that ants will try to raid hummingbird feeders like this; you learn something new everyday!

I suppose other bird species might enjoy eating drowned ants too if they stop to get a drink and/or bathe in the water?
