Our 16yo dog can't jump up into her favorite chair anymore, so I wanted to make a step stool for her. The goal was to make it as inexpensive as possible, so I used 2 6ft fence boards cut into 1/4ths. I used 5 for the bottom and three across the back. The boards and the "L" brackets were all I had to purchase (around $12 for both).

The foam was a piece of an old crib mattress leftover from another project. The feet were deck post finials that I had cut in half also leftover from another project. The cover is made from an old scrap of upholstery fabric - it is removable/washable. The back padding is a pool noodle, the fabric cover sort of tucks into a slit in the noodle and it all fits down over the edge/back of the couch.

This turned out so great! It's so nice to help our furry family stay comfortable in their golden years and especially to have it look so nice and be in expensive. Wins all around!

Wow, 16 years old, not many dogs live to that ripe old age!  What breed is she?  Some kind of Dachshund mix?

Your little couch/step stool looks great and super comfortable.  Who knows, maybe, it'll be so comfy, she'll just decide to snooze there instead of going up into the chair!

When I was a teenager, I had a job walking an elderly woman's dog for her, and he needed a step stool so that he could get up into her bed with her at night too, but that was due to the dog's obesity, not age (obviously, my walking him didn't help in that regard  Tongue).

Yes, she's a dachshund chihuahua mix. She's pretty spry for 16, but her kidney levels are declining (common in older dogs), so I'm not sure how much time we have left with her. Sad

I thought so; we have a Chiweenie too, but ours is only about 7 years old.  Sorry to hear that her kidneys are going; treasure every day that you have left together!

This is a really great gift to make for such a loyal friend.  Thank you for sharing - I love how you used remainder parts and it turned into such a beautiful finished piece.
