It's been a long time since I've posted anything!

Since school has been out, I have spent a bunch of time building some stairs up our (relatively) steep front yard. We had built two garden boxes a few years ago, but time got away, and I just finally had some time to get to work on more easily accessing the rest of the yard!

Stairs!

I ended up chiseling through a lot of rocks by hand... then built wooden frames which I filled with concrete. I reinforced some areas with railroad spikes and rebar, but many of the steps are sitting on solid rock beneath, so I hope they hold up for a long time!

Here's the yard before:

And one more from the top of the steps:
Stairs!

Thank you for looking!

They look great & I'm so happy you found time to do the work yourself. I like the designs sketched in the tops, that's a nice detail.

Beautiful and practical project!  I take it you're going to leave the wooden framework in place, rather than remove it, since you went through the trouble of writing a message on each step?  I like that you made designs in the cement on the tops too, which will probably have the added benefit of making them less slippery when it rains to boot.

The DPW (department of public works) employees here often have to babysit freshly-poured cement projects for hours, until it sets, because children (and some adults) find writing/drawing in it irresistible (and barricades often aren't enough of a deterrent)!  Grin

What a unique staircase!  I hope you are going to plan your garden/yard to match the motifs.

Thanks for looking, everyone!

Patraw-- Yes! I'm leaving the framework, as I custom built them to sit on the irregular rocks under the soil. And creating a little bit more tread was the reason for the etched designs : )

Excelsior- That's the idea! We've been wanting to put some terraces/garden boxes in our front yard, and I'm hoping this can provide a little more direction (and stability, haha) for the next steps (haha)!

Impressive! I bet it feels great to see in your yard and use something you worked so hard on.
