I have tried growing succulents and cacti to no avail...I just over water and they turn to mush. When I saw these rock cacti on Pinterest, I decided I could probably make them but I was worried that they would either look too real or too cartoonish...I was going more for a fun, funky, look twice thing...

Anyway, they were pretty easy...I picked a few rocks out of my front walkway, which is all river rocks...painted them with white gesso and then green...I followed a rock painting tutorial from Pinterest.

I sunk the painted rocks into crazy colored fish gravel and then covered that up with a light coat of grey tiny pebbles...but, my cats decided to tip the thing over and I had gravel all over the floor!

So, I stuck the whole thing together and then thinned down some clear glue and poured it over the whole thing...those suckers aren't going anywhere, but it does weight a lot more now... Cheesy...My cats have left it alone.

Finally, cacti that is cat proofed and me proofed!  I don't think it needs any sun, but just in case, I put it in the window...

The flower on the biggest cactus is another painted rock...the flower on the round cactus is from some leftover daisy trim that I painted and glued up into shape! I had everything in my stash...which is my mission this year (use everything in stash!)...

Thanks, everyone...it is fun, simple, and you can get kids involved...let them have their own little cacti garden!

Neat project that looks quite realistic (I've never seen a collection of cacti made from rocks before either).  The painted line shadows on the longer ones are pretty convincing at giving the impression of recesses when they're really smooth surfaces too.  Covering the whole affair with a coat of glue to prevent spills was a great idea as well.

If you ever feel the urge to add non-prickly spines to them, I've had good luck doing that (with cacti monsters that I've made over the years) using small segments of fishing line (those bend instead of impaling).

And, lastly, I am incapable of not thinking of this photograph and caption every time that I read/hear about cats and cacti:

I saw some stuffed cacti that would be fun to make!  Using fishing line for the spines is genius!  Thanks for the idea...and yeah, the tutorial I used for painting was great, but it is not my thing...I would rather paint something else, but it was a fun diversion!  Thanks!

You pulled it off! I had to take a closer look at them even knowing they were painted. I need these since I too have a black thumb and kill all the plants!
