My family has a monthly craft group, and I organized for us to paint tote bags at this last one.  These photos are only about half of them...everyone else took theirs home already by the time I remembered photos!

They are super simple.  The patterns were made with painters tape and/or freezer paper cutouts and stencils.  We used regular acrylic paint and added textile medium.  I bought the bags in bulk online.

These are the ones I made, including the bird one in the first photo.

If you're going to try these, make sure you have a non-porous surface to use inside the bag while you paint.  We tried plain cardboard on the test ones, and it ended up sticking...but if you took it out before it was dry the paint leaked through.  So we ended up doing cardboard covered in plastic wrap, which worked great.  Also, the painters tape made for brick/concrete worked the best out of the few we tried.

Thanks for looking!  Grin

How utterly beautiful....  Did you dilute the acrylic paint or use it neat.  I would love to have a go at this.

It's great that your family has a monthly crafting activity like this; I'm sure that's a wonderful bonding experience!

I like your white bird & branch silhouette on the mottled rainbow background the best.  I know it's not yours, but the purple flower and bunny on the abstract geometric background is my second favorite, and the shining star surrounded by fuchsia is my third pick.  All of the bags look spiffy and I can only imagine what a grand time you and your clan had creating them all!

Thanks, everyone!

Thank you!  The textile medium thinned out the paint quite a bit by itself.  I did dilute it with water on some of them, mostly when I was running low on my mixed paint colors.  Cheesy  Just account for that with the ratio for the medium (if you use medium).

I really love all of these. This is such a fun idea. My art teacher friend has a monthly art night too. I haven't been in a long time, but it's fun when people can do that.
