I've been taking a class to try to create more finished works and this was the first piece I did. She is based on a photo my sister took at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade from a few years ago.

This was the sketch on hand stretched canvas. I used an overhead projector to transfer my drawing to canvas. It's an extra step from gridding or carbon paper but it's easiest for me because it uses materials I already have.

I started with her parasol because I knew that was going to be a PITA, and it was. It took two hours by itself!

(Why are these sideways?)

Couple more in progress shots. Not shown: an intermediate version where I was going to give her more realistic shading before deciding to stick with flat colors a la Alex Katz. That version shall never again see the light of day, it was awful!

Wonderful job on the figure, her clothing/accessories, and the background!  I agree that the solid colors work really well here rather than shading--it gives it a vintage feel, kind of like an old advertisement (I could totally see something like this propped up on the boardwalk outside a store/attraction).

I am also envious that your sister got to experience a mermaid parade--we never get awesome stuff like that here!

P.S. You should be able to rotate your photos if you go into "My Craftster", then "My Picture Hosting", select the image you want to fix, then look at the bottom of the page for "edit", click that, and then you can pick rotate CW/CCW to fix 'em.

Fantastic!  I think your choice of using solid colours really works for this fabulous mermaid Smiley  I think I need to explore the overhead projector transfer, your sketch is perfect!

Love this! I has so much personality and is so fun. Agreed, love the flat color verses shaded. Gives it a vintage carnival feel. Loving all the detail work too!
