That's the story, MistressT. I've only used them twice and there was no static, despite the high heat setting at the laundromat. Static is the point for me, too; if these don't control that there's no point. (Well, okay; it is fun to toss them i to the dryer like  basketball free throw, too!)
The ones I finished are pretty big (worked great on a load with a comforter and a stuffed animal) but I wound the last of the yarn to make smaller ones that I hope will felt down to baseball size.



I am allergic to wool but I did some research and as long as I don't rub them on my skin it shouldn't matter, especially if I put them through a few washes and dryer loads .

Please excuse the business nature of the link BUT they do explain the entire process really well and some questions people might have about wool dryer balls.
P.S. we used tennis balls, while I suggest them for large blankets and pillows i wouldn't use them day to day because they caused a baffle to come off on my dryer (those "blades" inside the drum) which causes it to now take longer for stuff to dry
