I have never done any "real" piecework and only simple quilting (ie sewing thru layers of things to hold them together). I made over 50 yards of 2.5"-wide strips of 2-8" long pieces of fabric in order to make a gross of 12" strips.

Those turned into sixteen 12" by 18" pieces that were used for each side of 8 place mats!

Not only was I intending to use up a bunch of remnants, I was trying to practice at being random which is really hard for me. I'm just a natural planner, damnit! But I did a pretty good job forcing myself to just let (most) pieces be placed where they "fell" at each step of the process. Grin

In order to keep with that (un)theme, I used two different variegated threads (one on the bobbin) to do all the quilting (poorly) and the machine stitch the binding (also kind of poorly). NO WAY was I going to hand-stitch all these! The binding is over 50' of bias tape using black/white/grey remnants.

WHAT THE H*CK WAS I THINKING?

Anyway, used up a bunch of smaller bits of fabric from my overburdened stash and will have a funny, just-because gift for my SIL (there's a story). I had the batting on hand, too, so the only thing I had to buy was the variegated threads!

I love how fun looking these are! And, I'm proud of you for embracing the random! I know how hard that can be. And how great that you did it almost 100% from stash- stashbusting project, indeed!

Thanks all!

Not so much embracing as that awkward hug you're given when you're trying to shake hands. Wink

And not so much fun as satisfying. Like chopping firewood or cleaning toilets.  Cheesy
