Tale as Old as Time Ballgown
Total Investment: $25.00 & 1 used wedding dress (mine)
5 bottles Rit Dyemore in Daffodil Yellow

For our 5th Anniversary my Husband and I decided to get dressed up and take new photos so I dragged my wedding dress out of storage. The problem was after what was I going to do with it? I decided to be brave and turn it into a costume and since I have been dreaming of having a Belle dress for ages it seemed the perfect alteration to make.

Original Dress:

Base Dress: This is the dress without a sash and after I cut off the train. The train actually came in really handy because this provided the fabric to make the off the shoulder sleeves on Belles dress and to add a corset back with modesty panel since it was too tight now.

Corset Back: When you need a few more inches in the top of a gown a corset back is your best friend. I removed the zipper and sewed in panels of corset loops made out of the dress train.

Off the Shoulder Sleeves: Thanks to the fabric from the train I was able to make them out of matching material.

Dying the Dress Yellow:
This was the most risky part of the whole project. Because the dress is 100% Polyester it required a special dye. Only try this if you will be ok with losing the dress and all the hard work youve put into altering it!

5 Bottles Rits DyeMoore Daffodil Yellow (designed for Polyester fabrics)

Wash the dress: To remove stains and residues that would prevent the dye from taking hold. I went to the Laundromat and shoved the dress in one of the jumbo washers.

Dying via the Tub method: Dump boiling water and dye in a large tub and let the dress soak for an hour. If necessary breathe into a paper bag to help ease the anxiety as you realize that if it fails you have wasted so much time and fabric.

Miraculously it is now yellow!!!!!

What a cool reconstruction! I knew it was a Belle dress from the thumbnail! <3 Thanks for the tips on adding the corset panel, good to know.

Smashing golden Belle dress; it took a lot of courage to alter a-one-of-a-kind item with huge sentimental value like that!  Lumiere gives this two thumbs, er, candles, up!

. . . did you get your husband to dress up as the Beast/Prince?  Wink

My husband said no but our little Beast was happy to get right in the pictures Smiley He kept playing hide and seek under the dress while I was trying to photograph it

That is so awesome. I think I like the entire dress better with the corset back. I would have never had the nerve to dye it, I', a wimp. You completely rocked it and it looks AMAZING!!!!
