Every year in our retirement park we have a BBQ & horse races.  When I tired of seeing the dreadful posterboard horses we were using, I enlisted the hubby to help cut out new ones from plywood & fasten them to stands.  I then spent a lot of time painting all six them so each was a different color.  Made for more colorful races.

What, no blue horse with a rainbow mane? Cheesy

Nice job on this equine sextet (the spotted one is my favorite).  So, do you just use these like a child's hobby horse?

My thanks to everyone for the sweet comments.  The pinto is my favorite too but if I'd thought of a rainbow blue I'd have made one & she'd have been everyone's favorite.

We use a long strip of carpet to make a lane for each horse.  It's marked off in squares---only about 6 or 8---but they're large enough for the horse to stand on.  The Jockey stands behind the horse & moves him forward---like a board game.  Our announcer rolls 3 dice & calls off the number for each horse to move.  If 2 or 3 of the same number comes up, the horse moves that many spaces.  Our jockeys dress in outlandish costumes & our inventive announcer gives each horse & jockey a name & background.  He's very dramatic about everything.

We have a betting window where you can place quarter bets on the race & cheer on your favorite.  No one wins or loses big but we have fun.  We have 6 or 8 races so there are lots of winners.  The races are held after our annual chicken BBQ so it makes a full evening for everyone.
