Willing to personal swap for art of my doggies!

« on: July 14, 2017 02:36:05 AM »

I made this for the Bird, Bee, and Butterfly swap for my partner.  Undersea_sun said that sandpipers were one of the birds she loves, so I found this sandpiper image and freehand stitched it with black thread on white cotton.  I was aiming for that sketched drawing look.

I also cannot say how much I love Morgan hoops
- they hold the fabric so drum-tight that stitching is a dream.

I wanted to make a beachy image, so coloured the fabric, after stitching, with Gelatos and water colour crayons, using wet brushes to blend the colours.  I really wiffle-waffled, as I really like how it looked as the basic black on white, but my original plan was to add colour, so I just went for it.

I then stretched and mounted the piece on an 8x10" piece of canvas board, with a layer of felt under the fabric, and stitched it in place, and covered the back with card stock with the swap info on it.

A lot more pics and stuff on my blog if anyone is interested....

Oh wow, it looks really amazing, looks like it's drawn, not stitched. Lovely work.

Thanks - as for the mounting - give it a try!  Dollar store canvases and canvas boards are perfect for this and mixed media - I find them a bit rough for painting and the like, but perfect for covering over and the price is absolutely right!  It makes a nice, stiff surface to pull the fabric over tightly.  I should have ironed it - but I was afraid of flattening the stitches too much.  But I was able to get a tight enough pull on the fabric to get most of the wrinkles out.

Beautiful work, onyx. I can't believe you free-handed your stitching!!

I think you made the right choice with the color - the finished piece is lovely!

And thanks for the mounting tip! I'll have to give it a try...

"so I found this sandpiper image and freehand stitched...."

Seriously? I feel so massively unskilled when I see that statement and see what you made. It looks like it was painted. Just stunning. I am so very humbled by your skills.

Aw - thanks.  Sometimes things just work out Smiley  The Karmic stitchery goddesses were looking out for me Smiley

I bet if I were to try to duplicate it, it could end up being a manky mess!

Wow, the stitching is super incredible. I like how you coloured it too, I don't have much luck getting crayon even looking so it's great to hear about other techniques. And I really like those hoops! They have them all over the east coast for rug hooking, it has to hold the fabric tight as a drum which other hoops just can't manage.

Yes, I love them - so glad I found them.  These are water soluble crayons - if you want a light wash of colour, you can lay a light layer on and go over it with a wet wet brush.  Or wet the crayon and fabric and get a heavier wash of colour, and use the brush to blend.  Or drag colour off the crayon with a wet brush and apply with the brush - You just need to experiment on what works for you.

This is gorgeous! The detail on the wings in particular is just stunning. I love how you managed to do the background as well. I'm sure toye swap partner must have been super happy.

Thank you both Smiley

I am seriously considering doing a couple of different birds like this for myself - maybe a nuthatches, chickadees, cardinals - for our bedroom.

Thank you - I still love this... I just found the original image the other day and am half tempted to try to remake it for myself!
