Made for Glamis in the recent I Love Monsters swap.

I scoured the internet for inspiration then set about trying to figure out how to piece him together.
He's got a double set of antennae, feathery bits and shaped wire painted with bronze nail polish. The ends are thread wrapped and inserted next to his beady little eyes. The legs are thread wrapped pipecleaners coated in glow-in-the-dark puffy paint, the ends dipped in gesso &/or coated in the same bronze nail polish. They are attached with vintage buttons, I thought that lent a rather whimsical feel to an otherwise bizarre looking item.

The wings are made with some of my favourite new fabric and are edged in wrapped wire as well so they can be shaped. They're stitched in place down the back with a button added, there's a loop on the button for hanging him up.

His body has a fuzzy fun fur chest and also a segmented belly which was made by stitching on rows of hand spun wool yarn. I wasn't sure what sort of expression to give him so darkened the eye sockets and stitched the mouth last. I kinda love it, it's so horrible in a simple sort of way.

I had a hard time sending him off and when I told him he was going to be shut up into a box and mailed all the way to Germany, well, he wasn't so sure he wanted to leave either Cheesy.

I was gaga in the swap over your piece, and I'm thrilled he got his own thread so we can all rock him! Thanks for sharing the process! I would have had a hard time letting him go as well.

I have never worked with gesso before. Was it as a paint and/or texture feature, or did it perform a function as well?

From swap thread:

craftylittlemonkey your work is sublime. I love how long and lean he is. The wings appear both graceful and strong. How did you secure the antenae? Or does it just go through? I would love to see the speckling! I adore all your choices (the ruff!) esp making a loop for hanging.

Fabu!

Thank you Smiley.

Noooitaremybirthday recently made a fairy creature for the curiosity cabinet swap that was wrapped wire dipped in gesso. I didn't find it very easy to work with so only ended up dipping the ends of the bottom legs in it. The other 4 I just wrapped well and painted with nail polish. That is my go-to paint for everything these days, so many colours and so versatile!

Yes! I remember that creature!  - Now I want to make one of my own!

I like how you used the polish. I wouldn't have thought about it.

Thank for the tip on the gesso!

I saw a tutorial like this one that inspired me, I've used wire and nail polish for a few things since.

Yes! So I had a similar (exactly the same but a different blogger) tutorial bookmarked. But you took the concept and went the extra mile. I love how you reapplied the project.

WOW! So many great details. And also a little to scary for me to look too closely at! ACK!

Yes! Congrats! This has been chosen as a Featured Project! Smiley

Sorry you weren't notified right away. We are having some blog issues and I was hoping to be able to put up the link, but alas, we're still working on the article. I'll edit the link in when things are back up.
